The world has gone bonkers. The Royal Challengers Bangalore have signed Shane Watson for a staggering sum of almost $2 million. According to CricMetric , last year, Watson provided $678,314 worth of value - far less than his salary of $1.3 million. Incredible. Watson provided a 50% return on his investment and receives a $700,000 raise this year. Nice work if you can get it!

The Mumbai Indians got a steal with Jos Buttler.

I am surprised that Guptill went undrafted given his current form. I would have also taken a flyer on Khawaja given his base price.

Holder, Darren Bravo, Sammy, Permaul, Badree, Dowrich, Samuels, Bishoo, Benn, Edwards, Taylor, Santokie, Gabriel, Deonarine, Barnwell, Best and Emrit all go unsold. Crikey, that's a lot of talent to go unsold.

The entire draft is fascinating to watch. It's like one big eBay auction. This auctioneer could sell ice to an Eskimo. The bidding war over Kyle Abbott was riveting stuff. In Kings XI Punjab's defense, we've all been guilty of bidding on a mystery box of junk in the hopes of finding an old antique worth millions.

I can't believe Watto went for that amount ... AUD$1.98 million.  Joining compatriot Mitchell Starc and explosive batsmen Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli also Travis Head, RCB have a super powerful batting line-up.

Top 5 IPL buys

Watson, RCB AUD1.98m
Negi, DD $1.8m
Morris, DD $1.5m
Yuvraj, SRH $1.5m
Mohit, KXIP $1.4m

England's Jos Buttler has been bought for £385,000 by Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction.

The wicketkeeper-batsman decided to put himself forward for the IPL, which runs from 9 April to 29 May, after losing his Test place to Jonny Bairstow.

Ex-England batsman Kevin Pietersen was the first player sold as Rising Pune Supergiants bought him for £350,000.

Shane Watson attracted the highest bid as Royal Challengers Bangalore paid more than £950,000 for the Australian.

In contrast, Kent wicketkeeper-batsman Sam Billings, who has five one-day international caps and five Twenty20 caps for England, was picked up by Delhi Daredevils for just £30,000.

England seamer Chris Jordan and Essex's new limited-overs captain Ravi Bopara failed to attract a bid.

England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan is under contract at Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Lancashire's Buttler has scored back-to-back ODI hundreds, the latest coming off 73 balls in the series opener against South Africa in Bloemfontein on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old is taking part in the second ODI in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

MUMBAI,(Reuters) – Australia’s Shane Watson attracted a top bid of $1.4 million and will join the Bangalore franchise for the next edition of the Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament, while former England skipper Kevin Pietersen was bought by newcomers Pune.

All-rounder Watson, who had a base price of 20 million rupees ($295,000), was in high demand in Saturday’s auction for the cash-rich tournament, the ninth edition of which will be played from April 9 to May 29.

“Incredibly excited to join such a great franchise. Looking forward to joining up with my new team mates in April,” the 34-year-old said on Twitter.

The right-handed batsman, who also bowls medium pace, will join a Bangalore team already boasting power-hitters Chris Gayle, AB de Villliers and Virat Kohli, and who have Australia’s pace spearhead Mitchell Starc in their ranks.

Aaron Finch, Australia’s captain in the shortest form of the game, went unsold after injuring his left hamstring during a T20 match against India in Melbourne last month.

In-form New Zealand opening batsman Martin Guptill was also unsold in the first round of auctions for marquee players.

Pune, to be led by India’s limited-overs captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and coached by former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming, outbid fellow newcomers Rajkot to land Pietersen for 35 million rupees.

Pune and Rajkot were unveiled as the new teams in the Twenty20 competition in December, replacing Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

The franchise owners of Rajasthan and Chennai were suspended for two years by the Indian cricket board in July for their role in an illegal betting scandal that erupted in 2013.

Pietersen, who has been plying his trade in T20 leagues around the world after England shut the selection door on its controversial former captain, was the first player to be sold at the auction on Saturday.

All-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who fetched 160 million rupees at last year’s auction, attracted the highest bid among Indian players on Saturday and will play for the Hyderabad franchise after being bought for 70 million rupees.

Hyderabad also spent 55 million rupees on Ashish Nehra, the 36-year-old fast bowler who has also been included in India’s World Twenty20 squad.

Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

You have to understand that all rounders are very valuable in T20, and international quality all rounders more so because the teams can select only 4 foreign players. He is also in very good form as seen in the recent Australia and India T20I series. Add to all of these the fact that he is very friendly and popular among the fans, and you can understand why he is getting so much money. I think he is worth that money definitely.

At the price he was bought, he was a steal for Mumbai Indians. He is a extremely good limited overs batsman and is also a very good keeper. The only thing stopping him from taking the IPL by storm is whether he gets a chance to play or not. Mumbai is known for sticking to 4-5 big name players like Pollard, Anderson, Malinga etc. With only four players allowed in the XI it remains to be seen whether Mumbai are ready to forego either Pollard or Lendl Simmons, who was terrific for them last season, to ensure that Butler gets a chance to play.
