Curtly Ambrose was scathing about the West Indies’ “totally embarrassing†defeat by England inside three days during last week’s first Test at Edgbaston.
But as the three-match series heads to Headingley, where the second Test starts on Friday, it is a reminder the former fast bowler was in a West Indies side beaten inside two days by England at the Leeds ground 17 years ago. In 2000, the teams started the fourth Test of a five-match series at Yorkshire’s headquarters all square at 1-1.
Whereas England victories over the men from the Caribbean have now become commonplace — 2000 was the last time the West Indies won a Test on English soil — it was a very different story at the turn of the century.

Chris Woakes has been named in the team for the Second Investec Test against West Indies at Headingley.
Woakes, who sustained a side strain on 1 June, has been recalled in place of Toby Roland-Jones.
Woakes took five wickets and scored 53 in his first game back for Warwickshire earlier this month.
England team for first Test against West Indies:
Joe Root (Yorkshire, captain)
Moeen Ali (Worcestershire)
James Anderson (Lancashire)
Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire)
Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)
Alastair Cook (Essex)
Dawid Malan (Middlesex)
Ben Stokes (Durham)
Mark Stoneman (Surrey)
Tom Westley (Essex)
Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)

In 2007
, they were beaten by an innings and 283 runs
(albeit with Ramnaresh Sarwan unable to bat), an even heftier drubbing than
last week at Edgbaston and their biggest-ever innings defeat.
In 2000
, the match - a few weeks after what remains their last Test victory
didn't see a third day as West Indies were skittled for 61
in their second innings as Andrew Caddick took four wickets in an over.
