Joe Root says he needs to grow up

England batsman Joe Root says he needs to "grow up a bit" after reacting angrily to being given out on day one of the fifth Test against India.

Root was adjudged caught behind on review after playing a sweep shot against spinner Ravindra Jadeja.

He was seen talking to himself as he departed and aimed a kick at the boundary rope on his way off the field.

"There was frustration there," said Root. "If I get punished then I'm sure it's deserved."

The original decision of not-out was overturned when third umpire Bruce Oxenford decided that a sound picked up by the on-field microphone as the ball passed the bat was an edge to wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel.

"I was adamant I didn't hit it but there was a spike of sound on the replay and there is no point moaning about it," he added.

I think that the first step to change and to grow up is to realize that we need to, so great that he is saying it. Every player feels frustration, but getting angry doesn't solve anything, we just need to focus on how to perform better next time.

I'm not saying that I want to see players reacting angrily when a decision goes against them, but at least it shows that the players care and have a passion about the game. The last thing I want to see is a game being played almost like emotionless robots, and I think if we do start to fine or warn players for reacting and especially in the way that root did (the reaction wasn't aimed at anybody), then we run the risk of diluting the game that much that players will become almost void of all emotion win, lose or draw.

You are quite right, it's good to see passion for the game because it's passion that makes the game grow. One thing would be to have a bad reaction toward someone, but he was just angry against himself, so no one can really blame him for it, can we?

Recently there as been a lot of talk here in England about how committed to the team the England players are. These may not be the richest men in sport, but due to the central contracts being handed out then they aren't going to be short of money so the question I think was going to come up will they still care as much now as what they once did.

Root and a few others do still show that they care a great deal and especially if their own performance isn't up to scratch. t just seems that at the moment they can't do right for doing wrong sometimes, and if he had have walked off he would have been called for not caring enough, he reacted how he did and get's chastised for it so what exactly are they supposed to do? It's not as if he smashed the bat round the back of the umpires head or chased the India captain round the field is it...he was pi**ed off with himself and reacted angrily to his own performance and I don't see anything wrong with that.

I don't think money should be the central question here because just look at football players, they are the most rich in the world, but still have big motivation. So I think something has to be wrong when passion is confused by something else. Well, discipline has to exist too obviously!

I don't know, I live in England and support one of the richest football teams in the world, Manchester City and some of the performances leave a lot to be desired sometimes and us fans do question their commitment. If I'm being paid £225,000 a week, win lose or draw and no matter what my performance is like, I do think that people have a right to question players commitment when it's quite clear that some days they aren't putting a shift in.

The central contracts now with the England cricket team as kind of ring fenced what they can earn, and they have the luxury of knowing that they don't have to perform to the best of their ability to get a wage. Performance related pay would be nice to see, but that will never happen in this day and age.

As a sports fan, that is something that hurts me. When I see my team losing and while still on the pitch, the players that just lost are smiling and look really happy, that just shows me they really don't care. So yeah, passion in the game is a must!

That's the word and emotion that's missing sometimes I think in the performances, and again...the central contracts awarded by the ECB to certain players haven't helped. Years ago it used to be an achievement to be picked to play for your country and win as many caps as you can, now it seems that the achievement is just getting a central contract, once you've got one of them then it doesn't matter if the performance drops because you've got what you wanted, a big payday no matter how you perform.

It's sad to see top players reaching that level of motivation and caring only about pay. I think that playing for the national team should be the biggest honor really and those who that feel that jersey that way should not wear it at all.

ChristinaIt is time for a full evaluation and accountability to the people of this region for the disastrous batting performance of the West Indies Cricket Team. We cannot disregard what all of us witnessed and endured in the last three test matches.
