Darren Bravo : poor performances

WICB chairman Dave Cameron has said Darren Bravo was offered a Grade-C contract

because his "poor" recent performances did not merit a higher pay grade.

Cameron also revealed that of the 15 players who were recently offered WICB contracts

till September 2017, only Kraigg Brathwaite and Marlon Samuels

had received contracts higher than the C category.

Along with Bravo, Carlos Brathwaite and Samuels, who was given a Grade-B contract,

had declined the board's offer. .

"If you continue to keep giving him an A contract then what is the motivation

to get better? He has been on an A contract and he hasn't done well."

This is the first time that the WICB offered an explanation of the contract Bravo

was offered.

This is a well-meaning but faulty contract system.

Sure, you can't reward someone solely based on their last 12 months. A guy averaging 100 over the last 12 months doesn't deserve a good contract if his career average is nevertheless only 10.

But weighing the "last 12 months average" against their "career average" leads to different kinds of abberations, like Marlon Samuels - who has sucked forever - getting "rewarded" a higher contract than Bravo because he sucks less than his usual suckage.

The WICB should tweak their algorithm or have a policy whereby it is only a guideline. It's a good idea though. I like what Cameron is doing with this pay structure.

As we discussed earlier in the year, Bravo's biggest problem is his inability to score runs at home. He is a world beater when playing overseas, but when playing at home, he becomes a below average batsman. His record in the subcontinent is sublime. He is one of only 16 non-Asian batsman to score 1000+ runs in the subcontinent with an average greater than 50 (Sobers, Kanhai, Lara, Kallicharran and Lloyd are the other 5 WI batsmen on this elite list).

Below is Bravo's 10 innings moving average, which I believe is a better way to judge a player's current form.

Bravo's 3-year weighted average is 34.06. His median score is 24.0 - the same as Haynes, Crowe, Gomes, Vengsarkar and Vaughan. Pretty good company. For reference, a median score of 13 is average, 30+ is considered elite. Bradman tops the list with a median score of 56.5. Everton Weekes has the highest median score by a WI batsman (36.0).

For comparison, Marlon's 3 year weighted Test average is 25.49, and his median score is 17.0.

Even after giving this one some more thought, I am at a loss for words. Even accounting for his struggles at home, Bravo is clearly the second best Test player on the team.

His two year average between 2012-2014 was 42.42, though this was somewhat boosted by the series against Bangladesh. If you remove those six innings, his average drops to 37.26, pretty much in line with his average (34.03) over his last two years. In the six series over the last two years, Bravo averaged 39.50 against England, 12.25 against Australia at home, 36.00 against Sri Lanka, 49.40 against Australia in Australia, 19.85 against India and 45.50 against Pakistan.

Why should any player show any loyalty to the board if they aren't going to show any loyalty to them. As a player, I would take great offence to Marlon Samuels being offered a higher grade contract. That is a joke.
