Given the two recent series in the subcontinent, I thought it would be timely to see how the major Test sides have fared against spin since 2015. I was finally able to gain access to the data I needed and parse everything to put into a neat table.

South Africa have really struggled against spin, although a large part of that was the horrific series against India. England's numbers will probably look a whole lot worse by years end.

West Indies have struggled most against slow left-armers with Herath causing the most damage (15 wickets at an average of 16.13).

I would not conclude that Leggies leak more runs versus Offies.

marginal as well for wkts. per innings.

Dilly,

Is there an error as the thread said since 2015 but tne lead post says 2013!

Does that change anything?

With numbers and your general cricketing expertise what are our thoughts about batsmens' effectiveness gains spin?

Many thanks.

Good eye, Mail. Yes, it should have read since 2015. I have gone ahead and updated the original post to reflect this. Thanks.

One of the (many) things I believe DRS has changed for the better is bringing back finger spinners (especially left-arm orthodox) into the game. Rangana Herath is a great example of this. In the first six years of his career, 19% of his Test wickets were taken by lbw, but this has risen to 27% in the years since the introduction of DRS. With the recent changes to increase the umpires call zone, this number will surely rise further.

As to your question, I believe the best players are those that rotate the strike and are not just looking to survive. They manipulate the field, get off strike and never allow the bowler to settle. Their aggressiveness also helps to remove those fielders in close.  I thought Ben Duckett was the only English batsman to do this in the second Test against Bangladesh. One shot I would like to see the English batsman eliminate during the forthcoming series against India is the back foot cut. I'd much rather the batsman look to play a punch shot instead. And as always, foot movement is crucial. Look to come forward first as you can always pick the length and go back.

Hope all is well with you. Looking forward to the upcoming series with India, though concerned with the makeup of England's batting lineup. It's too left-handed heavy for my liking.

In an effort to make up for my inability to differentiate between 2013 and 2015, I went ahead and parsed the data since 2013. At least something good come from my poor proofreading skills. :)

Perhaps the most perplexing aspect of AT&T Stadium, otherwise known as “Jerry World,” is the glare from the sun that bursts through the windows and shines directly onto the field. Time and time again the glare has impacted players’ visibility during games, yet Jerry Jones refuses to make any changes to account for the sun.

Rather than install curtains, Jones has previously said he feels it’s a home-field advantage to have that type of stadium factor impacting games. Well, the glare ended up benefitting the Chiefs early into Thursday’s Thanksgiving game, as a pass from Dak Prescott to George Pickens fell incomplete, at least in part due to the impact of the sun’s glare.

SerenaThis batting performance by the West Indies in the second innings blew me away. I kept closing my eyes and then rubbing and opening them again and sat transfixed as I watch that unbelievable partnership between John Campbell and Shai Hope. What a magnificent performance by these two! It just goes to show that patience, determination and effort can go a long way to improve the performances of the West Indies team. Let us hope that this effort by West Indies batsmen would not be a one-off performance, but will be the beginning of a renewed effort to improve the performances of the team, going forward.(13.10.2025, 09:28)(09:28)0

"As a competitor, you want to be the starter. But I prepare to be the starter, I know I'm a starter in this league.

But you have to be able to be grateful for your role...my role right now is to assist Russ and Jaxson to be the best that they can be while preparing to be the best that I can be.

No matter if I'm 3, 33, this is my first year being number 19, so it's always a first for everything.
