The cricket community has been plunged into a state of mourning with the passing of Lusignan Sports Club off-spin bowler, Guyanand Ramcharan.
Ramcharan, who succumbed to injuries he picked up during a vehicular accident a few weeks ago, was 39. News Room understands that as a result of the accident, the cricketer’s leg was broken, while his wife, who was in the vehicle at the time, broke both her hands.
Ramcharan was an active member of the Lusignan Sports Club, and was one of the club’s leading cricketers. His demise has left members of the club in a state of shock. On Sunday, the club issued a statement, labelling the late cricketer as a gentleman and mentor.

“The Lusignan Sports Club (LSC) is in mourning following the demise of one of the club’s stalwart off-spinners, Guyanand Ramcharan, better known as Abbas, who died at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Saturday 10th September 2016. His passing is a great loss to the club, and while we are in mourning, club members wish to offer condolences to his family, relatives and friends.
Abbas was such an integral member of LSC, he featured most of the club’s many triumphs during the early 2000s and lasting that entire decade. He was a match-winner on his own, dominating matches with misery spells of spin, and winning several Man-of-the-Match awards solely on his bowling.
He was ever present when the club secured tight victories, won major titles, and also when we rarely lost. One national record he holds symbolises his mastery. In a sun-baked afternoon at Uitvlugt cricket ground, in a Demerara Cricket Board first division 50 overs game, he produced bowling figures of nine overs, nine maidens, and took four wickets (9-9-0-4) for Lusignan against Uitvlugt.
