Windwards’ Matthew frustrates TT U-19s

Windward Islands Under-19s made their Trinidad and Tobago counterparts toil for the whole day yesterday as their second round encounter ended as a stalemate at the Park Hill playing field.
Trinidad and Tobago had secured a first innings lead on Monday through solid contributions from vice-captain Saiba Battoosingh (45 not out), Keagan Simmons (55), Dejourn Charles (40), skipper Kirstan Kallicharan (20) and Jonathan Bootan (27) as they closed play at 212 for nine after Windward Islands had posted 204 in their first innings.
Trinidad and Tobago declared the first innings closed on the overnight total and were hoping to knock over the Windwards quickly but that did not materialise.
Opener Anil Matthew defied the Trinidadians and registered a brilliant century that led the way for Windwards to 298 for eight after 87.2 overs when play was called off yesterday.
Matthew recorded one six and seven fours off 225 balls and shared a 99-run fourth wicket partnership with Johnel Eugene who had a knock of 53 that contained seven fours off 105 balls.
Matthew and Ryan John also built a 73-run sixth stand that placed Windwards in a strong position to rally for the drawn fixture.
In the other match, Barbados defeated Jamaica by 113 runs at Sion Hill playing field.
Set a victory target of 178 runs, Jamaica were bowled out for 64 runs in 34.1 overs.
