Former WI player to host annual camp

Former West Indies cricketer Winston Benjamin has announced the dates for his Grassroot Cricket Academy and has urged parents to enroll children showing an interest in cricket and sports in general.

The former fast bowler, who played 21 Tests for the regional squad, said participants will be treated to “something different”, this year.

“This year, my summer camp starts on July 11 and ends August 19, at Dredgers. This is my sixth year and I am just hoping that the parents that are looking for their child or children to take part in any sport can come out. It’s a good little programme we are having and it’s going to be a little different this year than the other years,” he said.

The player, who made his Test debut against India at Delhi on the 1987/88 tour, said the cost to parents is minimal ($50 per child) and covers a number of the necessities that will be provided to the campers on a daily basis.

“You get a shirt, refreshments will be provided so I am just saying to all Antiguans who want their children or child to be involved with or to play cricket to come out and just enroll them as quickly as possible so that we can just get the ball rolling,” Benjamin said.
