Kallicharran fancied to lead TT Youth teams

KIRSTAN KALLICHARRAN, the youngest member of the triumphant West Indies Under-19 World Cup cricket team, is highly favoured to captain both the Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 and Under-19 teams for the forthcoming 2016 West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Youth competitions.
Kallicharran, 16, successfully led North to its double crown of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board’s Vasha North-South Classic Under-17 category. He was instrumental with solid batting contributions on both occasions in 2015 and is unquestionably the best person to lead the national team in the regional Under-17 competition which will be staged in Trinidad and Tobago from July 8-18.
His rival to the leadership position is South’s talented opener Cephas Cooper who has also been in impressive for both years.
Cooper should be named as vice-captain.
In the Under-19 division, there will be a toss-up between Kallicharran and South’s captain Saiba Batoosingh whose leadership, apart from Cooper match-winning 55 was mainly responsible for South breaking the stranglehold on the Vasha North-South Classic age group 50-overs-a-side competitions.
Based on their performances in the North-South Classic, Batoosingh deserves to be given the honour of leading Trinidad and Tobago in the WICB Under-19 competition which is scheduled to be staged in St Vincent and the Grenadines from July 24 to August 20.
But many officials who are associated with the TT CB are projecting that Kallicharran should also be given the chance to captain both national teams.
The onus is on the selectors - Lalman Kowlessar (chairman), Roland Sampath, Deonarine Deyal, Tarandath Sammy and Surujdath Mahabir, to make the recommendation to the TT CB executive committee for ratification.
