AN Over-60s county cricket match between Hampshire Seniors and Devon at the Hogs ground at Warnford was abandoned yesterday when a visiting batsman collapsed on the boundary line just after he had batted.

The 45-over match in the national Over Sixties Championship was reaching a potentially thrilling climax with Devon requiring 16 runs off the last 13 balls of the match to overhaul Hampshire’s 235 all out at the Meon Valley venue.

Devon captain Nick Rogers, 61, who plays for Hatherleigh cricket club, suffered a cardiac arrest as he approached the boundary rope in front of the pavilion after being dismissed leg before wicket.

An air ambulance, two paramedics and three police vehicles attended the scene – the emergency crew taking over an hour to treat and stabilise Mr Rogers, who is chairman of Hatherleigh CC, was rushed to Queen Alexandra hospital in Portsmouth, where he is expected to remain for the next weeks or so.
The fact that Rogers’ life was saved on the field owed much to the forward thinking Hampshire Seniors Club, who several seasons ago bought several defibrillators after one of their own cricketers, Jim Smallbone, collapsed in a veterans match in West Sussex.

I am alive and in one piece  ::LOL:: Poor chap. One wonders whether teams will be required to keep defibrillators on site. Wonder whether the match was abandoned or ended on Duckworth-Lewis.

The worst injury I ever saw first-hand playing in a match came when our wicketkeeper stood up to the stumps to a seamer. Batsman swung hard, edged it and the ball smashed flush into the keepers face. His nose was rearranged and lost all his front teeth. Full credit to him, he was back behind the stumps a few weeks later. I am of the belief that you have to be crazy to be a wicketkeeper.

Glad to see ...was not sure IF last name was Rogers
OR whether u qualified to play in the  Over 60 tourney  ;)

The worst injury I was part of was a semi in Toronto and District league.

their #4 bat kept blocking and chewing up my overs ...

Captain came over and whispered "let him look up "

So I bounce and he missed ......no face guard  and he went down !

rushed to Hospital and later learned his retina was shifted and damaged

Ball landed flush in his eye socket ....he was so late to react.

could not do the Pub crawl after we won that game .....poor chap !
