History of Cricket in Guyana launched

As part of activities to commemorate its 150th anniversary, the Hand-in-Hand Group of Companies on Friday evening officially launched the Hand-in-Hand History of Cricket in Guyana 1865-1897, Volume One, at Cara Lodge.

Prominent Guyanese historian, Professor Clem Seecharan researched and wrote the book that consists of 482 pages, and chronicles the history of cricket in Guyana, spanning the years 1865-1897.

The ceremony was chaired by Howard Cox, Fire Manager/Director, while chairman of the Hand-in-Hand Group of Companies John Carpenter delivered the welcome remarks.

Former West Indies wicketkeeper and Vice-captain Deryck Murray along with Education Minister Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine delivered feature remarks.

Murray in his remarks, said he is happy to be a part of the historic launching, since cricket has played an integral role for the Caribbean people since the 1800s.

After lauding the company and Seecharran, he demanded “dissolution” of the WICB, and called for a more competent group to lead the WICB.

Roopnaraine explained that cricket is an important part of Guyanese history and culture and as such, he lauded the company as well as Seecharan for the bold step taken in ensuring our history is remembered.

Both Minister Roopnaraine and Murray recognised the contribution of the late Tony Cozier, who passed away on Wednesday last at the age of 75.

Also attending the ceremony were numerous cricket enthusiasts and stakeholders, including: current and past Guyana/West Indies players such as Roger and Mark Harper and Steven Jacobs; female West Indies player Tremayne Smartt ; former Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony; former West Indies cricketer, Joe Solomon; former West Indies Cricket Board director, Claude Raphael; former Director of Sport, Neil Kumar; musician Dave Martins and members of the diplomatic community among others.
