Roderick Estwick has been named as the new bowling coach of West Indies ahead of the tri-series also involving Australia and South Africa in June. Estwick, a former first-class cricketer, replaces Curtly Ambrose who was with the national team for close to three years as the bowling consultant. Ambrose's last assignment was the successful World T20 campaign in India earlier this year.

Estwick does not have experience as a Test cricketer but has a big reputation as a coach. He is also the bowling coach of the Barbados Pride franchise and has won many laurels for his achievements as a coach in Barbados and with the U-19 team. Estwick has played 37 First Class games for teams including Barbados, Transvaal in South Africa and the West Indies 'A' team.

The reason for Ambrose's departure is not evident just as yet. Estwick will join the national team in the preparatory camp for the tri-series that will be held later this month.

But who is going to give the fiery pre-match pep talk now?  :P

In all seriousness, great fast bowlers don't always make great coaches. Did any bowler improve under Ambi's reign? If anything, I would say that they all regressed by varying degrees. The numbers speak for themselves: Jerome Taylor was the only seamer with an average under 35 under Ambrose's tutelage.

Though the best bowlers have migrated to the shorter formats, we have seen a common decline in the fast bowling in all three formats.

Under Ambrose, West Indies as a bowling unit averaged 40.33 in Test matches - the highest of the 10 Test playing nations - capped off by the inept display in Australia where they finished with a collective average of 124 runs per wicket. Perhaps even worse, the bowlers have looked listless and lacked discipline.

The bowlers haven't fared much better in ODIs either, averaging 36.14 (third worst, only Pakistan and England have a higher average) combined with the highest economy rate (5.92) of any bowling unit over this period.

We all love to see the legends involved in cricket but I think that it is a good move to bring in Roddy Estwick.

Curtly Ambrose , the former West Indies fast bowler, has said the decision to remove him as West Indies' bowling consultant came as "a bit of a shock". Ambrose was replaced with Roddy Estwick on the weekend; he said head coach Phil Simmons told him the decision was made because Simmons wanted someone who is "more technical" to coach the team's fast bowlers.
"I only learnt about it from head coach Phil Simmons on Wednesday [last week], and when he told me I said to him that I am very disappointed, because I never expected it, and I never saw it coming because he never gave me any indication he was going to let me go," Ambrose was quoted as saying in the Antigua Observer. "So, it came as a bit of a shock basically, but I haven't decided which direction I am going to take just yet. I'll just pause and give it a little time to think about it and decide where I want to go after."
Ambrose had served as West Indies' consultant for the last three years, his most recent assignment being the World T20 triumph in India in April. The WICB press release did not state a reason for Ambrose's exit. "I spoke to head coach Phil Simmons, and he told me that he wanted someone who is more technical to work with the fast bowlers," Ambrose said. "So, I said to him well, if you knew I was doing a poor job, then you should have told me. He said no, I did a fantastic job, because I brought a high level of discipline to the team, and I have motivated the guys quite a bit... but he wants somebody more technical, hence, he is going for Roderick Estwick."
Estwick, who was given the designation of bowling coach, is due to join the West Indies pre-season preparatory camp on May 19, ahead of the home tri-series against Australia and South Africa that starts on June 3 in Guyana. Estwick had coached the Barbados domestic side as well as the West Indies Under-19 and Barbados Under-19 teams, apart from participating in the High Performance Centre programme.
