Best focussed on big effort for Hampshire

SOUTHAMPTON, England, CMC – Ex-West Indies and Barbados speedster, Tino Best, says he plans to give his all during his ongoing stint for Hampshire in the English County Champion-ship.

The 34-year-old caught the eye in only his second game for the county when he snatched a five-wicket haul against Lancashire earlier this week.

“That’s why Hampshire have brought me: to run in and express myself and I really enjoyed it,” Best said.

“At the end of the day you only have a short while to play this game and I’m 35 this summer. But I’m fit and strong and I’m always ready to go and to commit myself.”

Best was called up last month as a replacement for fellow former West Indies and Barbadian pacer, Fidel Edwards, who broke his ankle during warm-up on the final morning of Hampshire’s clash with Yorkshire.

His opening game against Middlesex was a frustrating experience as he finished with a single wicket from 25 overs in the game at the Rose Bowl.

And even though conditions were not ideal for fast bowling last Monday at Old Trafford, Best said it was important that he put in a big effort.

“… the sun was warm, the wicket was flat and I thought to myself that this is just like first class cricket in Barbados,” Best noted.

“The sun was hot but you still have to run in hard and bowl quick and that’s what Hampshire are paying me to do.”

He added: “The best wicket for me was getting Steven Croft, a good player who can take the game away from you.

“Alviro Petersen was a prize wicket too and it was a good battle because it was West Indies versus South Africa right there and I’m not going to back down.”

Best and Hampshire next host Nottinghamshire in ten days’ time.

Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

It a too early in the season obviously to tell if Best is going to be a success or not at Hampshire but I'd he carries on like he has been doing, I think he's going to prove a lot of people wrong, myself included.

Maybe the mixed response Hampshire got from taking him as spurred him on to prove people wrong? Only time will tell and we'll see what his stats are at the end of the season.

Based on your comments, I take it that you didn't get a chance to watch Tino bowl in either match? If you had, I am sure you would feel very differently. His numbers are incredibly deceiving.

I watched the majority of his first match against Middlesex, where he finished with match figures of 1-111. While he bowled with plenty of pace, he was wild and lacked discipline. The batsman teed off and he finished with an economy rate of 4.44. In all honesty, he was really poor.

In the game against Lancashire, his five-wicket haul needs to be looked at in the context of the match. He picked up his first wicket with Lancashire on 348/2. At that point, Lancashire were hitting out at anything and everything in an effort to grab the extra batting point and accumulate enough runs to set up an innings victory.

Again, full credit to him, he ran in hard and bowled with pace, but got absolutely spanked going at 4.50 runs per over. Two of his wickets came thanks to aggressive pull shots off nothing balls, Liam Livingstone was dismissed misjudging the line, the wicket of Steven Croft was thanks to an incredible slip catch by James Vince (though to his credit, he did bowl a probing line that got Croft to nibble at) and his fifth wicket was that of Jimmy Anderson.

Yes, he is bowling at a good pace, but he has exhibited no control. Numbers in such a small sample size can be very deceiving as is the case with Tino's start so far. He has never been particularly economical and so I don't expect that to change now. Unfortunately, as has been the case throughout his career, he seems to care more about bowling fast and radar-gun readings than bowling line and length to create pressure.
