THOMAS ADDRESSES ANTIGUA PULL OUT


Former West Indies wicketkeeper Devon Thomas has described his decision to opt out of the Antigua & Barbuda senior national team ahead of the Leeward Islands Cricket Board (LICB) 50-overs competition as an “easy one”. He pointed to “personal business” as the main reason for the decision.

The seasoned player said, however, that he knows the team will do well with or without his expertise.

“Why did I opt out of the team? It was just business really. I am playing cricket in Jamaica, but that is not the main reason why I opted to pull out. I really can’t go into details because it is of a personal nature. It was a difficult decision to make,” he said.

“At the end of the day, Antigua has always produced good players and we have always done well at this level, so I know we are going to do well regardless of who is playing and who is not,” Thomas added.

Thomas said his decision to stay for another two weeks in Jamaica, where he is currently playing for the St Thomas cricket team, is not an indication he is not willing to play for the sub-regional Leeward Islands Hurricanes outfit.

“My heart is with the Leeward Islands and they know my situation. I’ve been talking to the president (Enoch Lewis) and the CEO (Richard Berridge) and even the coach (Reginald Benjamin), so there are some things we have to put in place still and if I am not selected (as a protected player with the Leeward Islands or Jamaica) then I will be in the draft,” the cricketer said.

Thomas, who opted to ply his trade as a “play-for-pay” player with Jamaica Tallawahs at the start of the season, said the experience has been a rewarding one.
