Sunil Narine’s availability remains a subject of debate, even as Kolkata Knight Riders get ready for their IPL 9 opener against Delhi Daredevils at Eden Gardens on Sunday. While coach Jacques Kallis said the ICC verdict on the Trinidadian offie is awaited, franchise CEO Venky Mysore claimed he has got the clearance.
“He (Narine) has done a lot of work (on his action). We haven’t got the official verdict from the ICC yet, but hopefully it will come back positive. I’m pretty sure of it,” Kallis said at the press conference.
About three hours later, standing at the Eden Gardens Club House lobby, Mysore said: “Narine can straightaway resume bowling in matches once he returns. However, he might be unavailable in the first game as he has gone home following his father’s sudden demise.”

Narine was banned from bowling in international cricket after his action was found to be illegal during the third ODI against Sri Lanka in November last year. An independent assessment had ruled that all variations of his deliveries exceeded the permissible 15-degree limit.
The ICC said the “suspension will also be recognised and enforced by all national cricket federations within domestic cricket events played in their own jurisdiction”. He had earlier been reported twice, while playing for KKR in the Champions League T20 in 2014. Narine had undertaken corrective measures at the ICC-accredited centre in Chennai before being put to test at the National Cricket Performance Centre at Loughborough University. The West Indies Cricket Board included him in the 15-member squad for the World T20 but he pulled out, ostensibly to work on his bowling action. Narine has 74 scalps from 55 IPL matches at an economy rate of 6.00.

Carrying on Bayliss’s legacy

Trevor Bayliss has redefined white-ball coaching, helping KKR win the IPL twice in three years (2012 and 2014) and then, moving to England and guiding them to the World T20 final. So, as the IPL 9 starts, perhaps the biggest challenge for the two-time champions would be to replace the irreplaceable. Kallis, however, said he would try to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor. “He (Bayliss) was magnificent. He has shown how good he is after taking over the England job. He is doing wonderful for England. I’m fortunate for the system is in place. It certainly is unchanged. My coaching style would be similar to what his was. There’s an old saying if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Certainly, I will be sticking to that theory.”
Kallis’s experience of being part of the setup for six years would help. “Fortunately I worked as a player and then a filler coach, so (I) got to know what works with the guys; most of whom are pretty much the same. Like I say I would not be changing too much, but a couple of things to add to my own identity. As a whole I don’t think (about) changing things too much.”
That his captain Gautam Gambhir is a bit short of game time doesn’t worry the new coach. “We have had a lot of practice so far. The guys are hitting it well. Sometimes, coming in fresh and after a break is good. You have a good break away and come back fresh. I see it as a positive.”
