WICB set to discuss latest Caricom threat

The directors of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) will meet today in Jamaica to discuss the latest threat from CARICOM to have the board dissolved.

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Dr Keith Rowley upon his arrival from Belize recently said the deterioration of West Indies cricket, and the lack of proper management by the WICB, were discussed by CARICOM Heads. He also stated that CARICOM will inform the International Cricket Council (ICC) about the position of the Heads of Government.

As the directors meet, they will discuss the issue and will take a position. High on the agenda will  be the Indian tour of the Caribbean which is carded for July/August. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wants to play only Test matches and the directors will be briefed accordingly.

They are also expected to discuss the possibility of venues not being available due to regional governments not supporting the WICB. The four Test matches are carded for St. Lucia, Antigua, T&T and Jamaica.

The Board has to make an urgent decision so as to inform the BCCI and the ICC.

“CARICOM will now discontinue any further discussions on the matter with West Indies Cricket Board and the decision of the heads is that we insist that the recommendations of the committee be implemented… Is that the West Indies Cricket Board be dissolved and that an interim body be put in place to begin the restructuring of the management of West Indies Cricket. This is a position which is resolutely opposed by West Indies Cricket Board and in seeking to impose upon us that nothing is wrong with the management of West Indies Cricket.”
