Tobagonian elected to TTCB

The interests of Tobago cricket now have a strong voice at the highest level of the administration of the sport following the recent election of Kerwin John as a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB).

John is the current president of the Tobago Cricket Association (TCA) and was overwhelmingly voted into the 49-member board at the organisation’s quarterly meeting at the National Cricket Centre at Balmain in Couva on Wednesday.

The Tobago official was nominated by Tarandath Sammy, chairman of the East Zonal Council and an executive member of the TTCB. The nomination was seconded by Mitra Ragoonanan of the North East Zone.

And when the vote was taken, John was a clear winner defeating Brent Francis, president of the Primary Schools Cricket League 26-11. Francis was nominated by Dinanath Ramnarine, a National League representative and was seconded by Mahabir Ragoonanan of the North Zone.

John replaces Ian Ramlal, former president of the Primary Schools Cricket League whose term of office recently expired and the election of the Tobagonian was warmly welcomed by president of the TTCB, Azim Bassarath.

“The Cricket Board has always placed the development of the sport in the sister isle at the top of the agenda and we are pleased that Mr John is now part of the substantial discussion that will take place. We are certain that his contribution will be meaningful and will provide a clear path for the upliftment of the sport in Tobago,” said Bassarath.

The TTCB president said that over the years, cricket has been well-served by the emergence of many flannelled sportsmen who have risen to the top of the national ladder and even selected to play for the West Indies.

Among those who represented the island with distinction were Clint Yorke, Ken Williams, Lincoln Roberts and Navin Stewart, and successive age-group teams continue to make a big impact on the national stage.

Bassarath said that over the past three years, Tobago has also featured prominently on the international stage with the staging of matches in the West Indies Cricket Board’s Nagico Super50 regional tournament at Shaw Park in Scarborough.
