BBL: Sydney Sixers sign Chinese leg-spinner Ming Li

THE Sydney Sixers have made history by signing the first ever Chinese player to the BBL as the club’s community rookie.

Ming Li, a 24-year-old leg-spinner from Hong Kong, will join the Sixers this summer under the Cricket Australia rookie program.

Ming has been playing cricket since 2004 and debuted for Hong Kong in 2010 when it toured Papua New Guinea, and then played in the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games.

So far he has played in two official Twenty20s, taking on Afghanistan and the USA in 2012 ICC World Cup qualifiers in the United Arab Emirates. He went wicketless against Afghanistan but finished with impressive figures of 1-26 against the USA.

Ming’s interest in cricket was sparked by watching YouTube videos of Shane Warne, and he fashions his own model on that of the leg-spin legend.

“Playing in this competition and being involved with such a professional outfit will really help improve my cricketing skills, knowledge and experience,” Ming said.

“I am very excited to be selected as the community rookie for the Sydney Sixers and I intend to make the best of this rare opportunity.

“My aim is to be one of the leading cricketers for Hong Kong and I look forward to the challenges this experience will provide, which I know will go a long way in helping me achieve my cricketing goals.”
