T&TCB appoints Ramlal to WICB

General secretary of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) Arjoon Ramlal is the new director on the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

The educator, who has been a long serving member as the executive of the TTCB, replaces Baldath Mahabir who resigned from the post two weeks ago, saying that he wanted to remove himself from the forest to look at the trees.

A day after, the Caricom report on the governance of the WICB was released, calling for the board to be dissolved. There was a report circulating that Mahabir got the report before and it forced his hand. However, the southern businessman said he did not see the report and it had nothing to do with his resignation. He said that it was unfortunate that the claim was made and he can assure everyone that he formed his opinion without the assistance of any report.

Ramlal will now accompany president of the TTCB Azim Bassarath as directors from T&T that will sit on the WICB. The TTCB made the decision at their annual retreat at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva, on the weekend. It is understood that former WICB director Dr Allen Sammy was also discussed for the position but in the end, the executive opted to give Ramlal an opportunity to make a contribution at the highest level of administration of the game in the region.

Ramlal, who hails from Sangre Grande, is also the chairman of the North East Zone and has been credited on many occasions for his work in the administration of cricket.

Ramlal’s first meeting as a director is going to be hectic and important, as the board will meet on December 12 in St Lucia to discuss the Caricom sub-committee’s report and decide whether they are going to implement any of the points put forward.

There have been calls from three former presidents of the board Sir Wes Hall, Ken Gordon and Pat Rousseau for current president Dave Cameron to accept the report and make the necessary changes but the Jamaican has already stated that wholesale changes cannot come overnight.
