Cricket Australia XI break duck with victory over Tasmania at Bankstown Oval


THE Cricket Australia XI has earned its maiden Matador Cup win against the Tasmanian Tigers.

After losing its first two games by record margins against the New South Wales Blues and Victorian Bushrangers, the CA XI edged Tasmania by three runs at Bankstown Oval.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Will Bosisto’s young side posted a total of 241, well and truly eclipsing its previous high score of 79.

Tasmania fell just short in reply, making 238.

The CA XI got off to a strong start in its innings, with Marcus Harris and Jimmy Peirson putting on a 70-run opening stand, with the latter falling for 26 in the 13th over. With a solid platform built, the CA XI went on to make 241 with opener Harris topscoring with 84.

But he wasn’t the only batsman to stand up for the under-fire team, with captain Bosisto scoring 64 off 91 and Matt Short making a quick-fire 41 off 32 deliveries.

While things started perfectly with the bat for CA XI, the same could not be said for the Tigers, with opener Ben Dunk falling for 1 in the second over to Short. Tim Paine and Dominic Michael then rebuilt the innings, taking the score to 53 before the latter fell to Jack Wildermuth for 21.

The Tigers looked in control while Paine and George Bailey were out in the middle, with the pair putting on an 83-run partnership. But when the captain was trapped in front of the stumps by Wildermuth for 51 things went pear-shaped with Paine (56) soon joining him in the pavilion, and Jake Doran (13) and James Faulkner (17) failing to make the most of solid starts.

New South Wales make it three in a row


WESTERN Australia has been handed a comprehensive 75-run defeat in the Matador Cup by a rampant New South Wales Blues team.

The Warriors were all out for 189, falling well short of New South Wales’ total of 264. The margin of defeat meant the Blues picked up yet another bonus point.

Adam Voges’ side managed to do what no other team in the competition had before, seeing out Mitchell Starc’s first over without losing a wicket. Not that it mattered too much, with Starc’s opening partner Gurinder Sandhu drawing an outside edge from Shaun Marsh (1) in the fourth over.

Things went bad for WA quickly from there, with Starc knocking over Cameron Bancroft (5) and Mitchell Marsh (0) in consecutive deliveries in the seventh over. Two overs later and Starc added the scalp of Voges (2) to his wicket-tally.



Michael Klinger and Sam Whiteman then rebuilt the innings, putting on a 93-run stand.

It took the reintroduction of Sandhu to disrupt the partnership, with the Blacktown native dismissing Sam Whiteman (45) and Michael Klinger (51) in the 31st over.

The two wickets left the Warriors in trouble on 6-112 and things got even worse when Sandhu struck again, trapping Ashton Turner in front of the stumps for 14. The big quick finished with figures of 4-29 and was impressive throughout the competition.
