England right to overlook me for the Ashes, says Kevin Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen says England's Ashes triumph vindicates Andrew Strauss' decision to overlook him for the summer series.

Strauss, England's director of cricket, dumped the former captain prior to the series claiming a 'massive trust issue' had threatened harmony within the team camp.

Pietersen was dropped by England following the Ashes whitewash in Australia over the winter of 2013-14 but was told a fine showing at county level could result in a recall prior to the visits of New Zealand and the Aussies.

Despite hitting an unbeaten 326 for Surrey against Leicestershire at the Oval in May, the 35-year-old was not part of the squad announced for the summer showpiece days later.

England regained the Ashes with a 3-2 victory and Pietersen, who is currently playing for the Sunfoil Dolphins in South Africa, believes Strauss was proved correct in his decision to leave him out.

Speaking at a Sport Industry Group event in London, he said: "Absolutely it seems to be the right decision at the moment.

"Some of the stuff Strauss has done with the England team and getting past players into the dressing room is brilliant."

During an international career that spanned almost a decade, Pietersen, who says he will now concentrate on the Twenty20 version of the game, played 104 Tests, 136 One Day internationals and 37 Twenty20 Internationals, scoring a total of 13,797 runs.
