After 164 test matches and 11,867 runs, including 30 centuries and 66 half centuries, I don’t think it is too much for Chanderpaul to ask. He may well have in his sights Brian Lara’s record for the most runs as a West Indies batsman. He’s only some 87 runs away from the record. Admittedly, Brian was far more talented than Shiv. But “Tiger” has fought and shown real character at times when the chips were down

how many batsmen on the West Indies team in recent times can boast of having a far superior average to Shiv? All of the batsmen in the recent past have been average performers and inconsistent, to say the least.

Since Chanderpaul made his debut on 17 March 1994, the only West Indies batsman with a higher average is Brian Lara. Shiv's average stands at 51.37, Lara averaged 53.77. Gayle (42.18) is third, Blackwood (41.26) is fourth and Darren Bravo (41.22) is fifth.

Just to take it a little further, since Chaderpaul made his debut, only 15 batsman to have played at least 30 matches have a higher average over this period. The 15 batsman are: Sangakkara, Root, Steve Waugh, Kallis, Steve Smith, Tendulkar, Younis Khan, Lara, Amla, Dravid, Mohammad Yosuf, AB de Villiers, Ponting, Mathews and Hussey.
