West Indies duo had 'a little tussle' on-field over bowling changes as Windies beat UAE in Napier

West Indies skipper Jason Holder dismissed talk of a rift in the ranks on Sunday as he led his side to a likely World Cup quarter-final against New Zealand.

Holder, a surprise choice to lead the West Indies to the World Cup, appeared to be involved in an on-field argument with former captain Darren Sammy during their must-win final Pool B match against the United Arab Emirates in Napier.

The West Indies' eventual six-wicket victory all but propelled them into the knock-out phase, with only an unlikely tie in the final match between Pakistan and Ireland in Adelaide able to derail them.

The mission seemed in the bag when Holder won the toss, put UAE into bat and rapidly reduced them to 6-46 before Nasir Aziz and Amjad Javed staged a 107-run stand.

Sammy was brought on to try to break the partnership with the score at 6-108 after 30 overs and was not happy when taken out of the attack after just one over that yielded four runs.

Sammy and Holder appeared to have strong words which Holder later played down as "a little banter on the field" saying they wanted to have some fun but "unfortunately it probably didn't look that way."

He later conceded they "had a little tussle there".

"It's just part of the game. At the end of the day we shake hands and still smile together."

The West Indies World Cup campaign, which started with a shock loss to Ireland, has been dogged with suggestions of unhappiness in the camp with the 23-year-old Holder struggling to get the respect of the senior players.

But Holder rejected talk of problems and said the two-time champions were looking forward to a likely quarter-final against unbeaten New Zealand in Wellington on March 21.

"I couldn't ask for anything more from the guys. It was a must-win game and we had to win by a big margin and the way the guys came out and played cricket I can't ask for much more," he said.

The UAE, anchored by 60 from Aziz and 56 from Javed, made 175 which the West Indies took only 30.3 overs to haul in with Johnson Charles, playing his first game, hitting 55 off 40 deliveries.

Charles was called into the West Indies side after Darren Bravo was injured early in the tournament, and thrust into the starting line up against UAE at the last minute when big-hitting opener Chris Gayle pulled out with a recurrence of a back injury.

Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

Much ado about nothing except that Sammy should not have shown "dissent" openly.

Holding had some interesting comments on it during the break between innings.

He is not the player you would pick to have a mini-tantrum but Darren Sammy was not impressed when he was taken off after just

one over and seemed to drift into his own world as Dwayne Smith took over.

Holder went to his former captain to try to explain the decision but Sammy wasn't buying it.

They shared some choice words before Holder dispatched Sammy to the long-off boundary for an over  :P

and then brought him into the ring in the next over.

The lesson had been learned as Sammy eagerly chased after everything that came his way, and even some that didn't.

Sammy is a nice guy and is cool with Holder. They were hugging and smiling and chatting and sitting side by side for hours whilst the West Indies batted.

All is well ...Sammy is there on the team to be a mentor to Holder for the present time ... everyone knows that.  However, one can understand Holder being a bit miffed if Sammy tries to 'tek ovah'  8)

For sure .. but I was referring to when Holder ran over to Sammy, who was setting the field for Samuels' bowling, and told him judging from his body language to Sammy to stop setting the field and let him do his job as Cappo!

Sammy responded by indicating that he was just trying to help, but Holder would have none of it. This left Sammy fuming and openly embarrassed for all to see.

Could have been handled much better by Holder but inexperience and being seen as undermining as the Captain prevailed !! Guess he was making a statement !!

Sammy needs to calm down and recognize that he is no longer the captain of the odi team and therefore he needs to respect the captain's decisions. Holder is not the best captain at this point but he is still learning and he doesn't need the likes of Sammy to show dissent on the field.

A layer of shingle underneath the Westpac Stadium pitch has been one of the keys to reducing the Black Caps' opposition to rubble.

Coach Mike Hesson strolled out for his Tuesday sermon in a relaxed, jovial mood despite the grey chill bearing down outside in central Wellington.

The forecast for Saturday's Cricket World Cup quarterfinal against West Indies is fine and clear and Hesson's disposition was sunny as his troops return to a stadium where they've won 10 of their last 12 one-day internationals.

Hesson explained the drop-in pitch held the key to tripping up inexperienced visitors, especially in recent seasons after the bedrock was applied.

"It's quite an unusual bounce which takes a little while to get used to and we've played enough games there that our guys have adapted to that. Sides that haven't been there in recent times will need to adjust," Hesson said.

"I don't want to give too much away but it's a different surface, it's a drop-in and it had a big gap underneath it, now it's got some rubble or shingle underneath so it bounces a bit differently than it has in the past."
