David Warner: Australia's indispensable run machine by Garfield Robinson

No two batsmen playing today are more different in outlook than Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Virender Sehwag. If there were a scale that ranked batsmen from most restrained at one end to most forceful at the other, then those two would be placed at either end of the spectrum.

The West Indian with the strange stance is as stodgy as they come.More a prodder, a tapper, a deflector, than full-throated shot-maker,Chanderpaul has been, for years, possibly the games most difficult batsman to dislodge. The left-hander, it appears, views every delivery with suspicion. Its as if he feels each ball is some kind of explosive to be diffused, and so he ensures the danger is neutralized before any scoring opportunities are explored.

Why, is he Dave's real dad? :P

I agree BTW. He's more sensible version of Sehwag. Whoddathunk really. His aggressive batting style can turn matches around for Oz single handedly. I'd never thought he'd make it to the tests and then settle in, but he's done it and how.

His ton vs India in Perth, now his ton in SA is all testament to his quality.

@doosra - a skunt that meks dem runs tho.

Australia opener David Warner has all but accused South Africa wicketkeeper AB de Villiers of ball tampering, saying the keeper used his gloves to scuff the ball, hence the reverse swing with led to the Proteas victory.

South Africa won the second Test by 231 runs in PE, taking nine wickets in the evening of day four thanks to Dale Steyn finding hooping reverse swing. Warner has now said they will be asking the umpires to look at the SA ball management techniques.

Warner told Sky Sports Radio: "I think it comes down to the umpires warning both teams not to throw the ball into the wicket which you generally try and do

Doosra,

I agree Warner is a bit of an inconvenience, continually doing stupid things. Last summer with Root on a night out, his accusation of the Saffers for ball tampering and there are many similar things before for which he was fined.

I do not rate Warner and I am surprised he has done as well as he has but you simply cannot deny his numbers averaging almost 47 in tests. He has had a fine run recently but his technique is so flawed. 2014 has been exceptional thus far but the year is young. The previous two years he was ok without being exceptional. His away record is ok but needs improving.

from Kylester...

I do not see how you can come to this conclusion as Sehwag has a sustained and proven record, something Warner is yet to achieve. Sehwag played 104 tests with 23 hundreds and an average always over 50 until the end when it dropped to 49. Let us touch base again after Warner has achieved 50 tests and then 100, if he ever does that.

Whatever the comparisons, it is clear the man is having a fine run and he ahs done that brilliantly.

MaleahNow that Joe Root has 2 centuries in Australia, I assume those Australian fans, who said he couldn’t be classed as great unless he achieved that, will now say he is?? Given that the great Steve Smith has never scored a test ton in Pakistan….(05.01.2026, 12:31)(12:31)0
