Was Kallis better than Sobers?

Kallis is a very good player, but Sobers he is not. The two can be compared to cars. Kallis is a nice Nissan Maxima...very nice and sporty car, very good value and runs about $35,000 USD. Sobers is a Mercedes Benz S500 AMG...No additional description needed They are both great cars, but one is in a league by itself.

Comparing eras is a fools game.

I have said it all before but numbers do not tell it all but as  a Cricketer you can only deal with the opposition and conditions presented to you.

I will argue that Lara, Tendulkar and Kallis are better than Bradman.

If not comparable.

There is no point to discuss such comparison,  as many online users here not seen Sobers, Gavaskar & Bradman playing live on TV but they have seen enough of Kalis, Lara & Tendulkar game... you can't compare two sides unless you have seen both side ... !

At an individual level, the Caribbean expression of cricket reached its pinnacle in Sobers, a true-blue genius with his multifarious, all-round ability. Many believe him to be the greatest cricketer ever. I have no doubt he is.

Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

there is much more ot it than esthetics...'come on man!' ::LOL:: ::LOL:: ::LOL:: ::LOL::

in no conditions could you count out Sobers.  the worse, more challenging the conditions got the more certain he would score and take wickets.

on a cracking-up and dangerous Sabina Park in 1968 this tremendous fact about Sobers can be seen on ful display. see what and how Sobers nearly beat England in the late stages.. and how he dealt with the very fast england 3-prong of Snow, Jones and Brown on that wicket.

see what Kanhai did 1963, fifth test at the Oval in a challenging situation for the west indies, in the fourth innings... west indies needing to make 253 to win in trying conditions.

Kanhai came in, scoped out the scene for 2-3 overs, very circumspectly, them launched the most UNEXPECTED, tactically perfect, blistering attack that took the game right away from england.

that is not only esthetics but the heights of skill, smarts, confidence and courage.  I am sure that that was a premeditated planned attack that was cleared with the captain Worrell. the game was tight.. west indies could lose.  batting in a fourth innings of a test is hard business to get almost any total

Lara and Gayle had and have the most amazing focus. Lara is in a class by himself in that regard.  no one but Bradman ever did what Lara did consistently... stay at the wicket for long, long periods and simply score and score and score.  Lara is beyond Bradman in that regard.  Gayle somewhere behind both

Butcher and especially Solomon were great at the rearguard batting... at all levels.  Gomes....and sooprisingly Logie too.  I don't think Logie ever failed to score something when he was at the crease with wickets tumbling at the other end.

and Logie after Kanhai, was twinkle toes himself at the crease...

all  facts that can be compared... beyond a doubt..so far.

in time we wil be able to compare eras and more..if not already.  there can be and is nothing without an answer..or the nearest approximation we can achieve. we may not have it yet but in time...

the thing is we cant stop trying just because we 'feel' two things cant be compared.

we have to make sure that indeed they cant be.  and in that relative to players from different eras in cricket,  I believe they can indeed be compared

apart from terrific natural playing skills and physical abilities west indian players had brains too, all the qualities of courage and smarts that players from any other cricket nation displayed, were famous for

west indi players never felt constrained to play full out under most of the captains they did not regard as worthy.

when west indian began appointing worthy captains all of that changed and the full personalities of west indian players blossomed to expose that we were fully human..like everbody else

plus note..from Bradman to sobers, to Haynes and even Gayle..the freaky capability of west indian batsmen to deal with bad batting conditions.

the official greatest Bradman could not do it but Headley could.

Sobers was master and Kanhai too..on bad wickets.  Kanhai cud put his head down and with his superb technique his bat could become  barn door.

and that I notice with all great west indian batsmen..Sobers, Kanhai, Lara, Viv, Gayle, Kalliecharran.  if and when these batsmen decided to play defensively you could not get them out.  their defenses were literally impregnable
