I would agree, this is a very fair point.
But that was my point regarding players like Shakib as I said, he doesn't average that much, but he's got to play according to the team - in a weaker side and all that. Yet you can see the times he's won MOTM and all to know how quality a player he is and how he delivers under pressure.
Or hell, even Ross Taylor - as Mailsta said. It's hard to enumerate their contributions.
I essentially agree with you - 40+ with 90 s/r players are quality, no doubt. Regardless of context. But I'm saying that restricting this to average and s/r would make many quality players to miss out too.

Kylester,
Your continued points about Shakib is one of the reasons I asked the question, more to create discussion as it is obvious what is a good average or not and you know those players who do not have a great average but actually win games.
Forgetting the official rankings what would be everyone's top 10?
Say someone like Samuels who has abysmal numbers, do you consider him in the same light of a Shakib for example?

DID YOU FOLKS KNOW ?
* For batsmen who have scored a minimum of 1000 runs in onedayers:
*
Darren Sammy has the 3rd highest strike rate----Sammy's strike rate is 101.31; his ODI average is 23.95
* Kieron Pollard has a 93.54 strike rate and a 24.92 average
* SAMMY IS A BETTER ODI PERFORMER THAN POLLARD.
* Dwayne Bravo has an 82.53 strike rate and a 25.30 average.
* SAMMY IS A BETTER ODI PERFORMER THAN BRAVO

If a team bats the full 50 overs with a strike rate of 90 then you have a a 270 score .
I believe a team strike rate is the most important criteria in Odi's rather than batting averages but that must bat the full 50 overs

* There has to be a balance between strike rate and batting average.
* A batsman with a 25 batting average and a 90 strike rate is really a cow lasher.
* Dwayne Smith has a 93.78 strike rate and a 16.69 batting average---he is a cow lasher.
* Kieron Pollard has a 93.54 strike rate and a 24.92 batting average---he is a cow lasher.
* Darren Sammy has a 101.31 strike rate and 23.95 batting average---he is a cow lasher.
*
ODI TEAMS DONT WIN CONSISTENTLY WITH COW LASHERS.
* Look at the Indian batsmen----they have both high strike rates and batting averages.

.. and that is why I stated that it is contingent on them batting the full fifty overs. Making 20 at a strike rate of 200 means dickall

BRIAN LARA'S ODI STRIKE RATE WAS ONLY 79.62---His batting average was 40.90
* What does that 79.62 strike rate by the great Lara tell you ?
* It tells you that the oneday game has changed.
* With all the new fielding restrictions----STRIKE RATES have gone up in onedayers.
* Check out the Indian batsmen---that are averaging in the 40s and 50s with strike rates in the 80s and 90s.
* Chanderpaul has a batting average of 41.67---higher than Lara's 40.90 and a strike rate of 70.74---8.8 points below Lara----but Shiv can't make Otis Gibson WI team----guess Lara would have been dropped by Otis too.
