The West Indies' spin attack may force some adjustments to the Black Caps' approach on today's third day of the final Test in Hamilton.
The Black Caps are 156 for three in reply to the Windies' 367, with off-spinner Sunil Narine taking two wickets.
The hosts have been reduced to a rate of less than two and a half an over.
Black Caps batsman Kane Williamson was dismissed by Narine for 58, and says the Hamilton pitch is throwing up some surprises.
He says he's never really seen the pitch offer spin like it is, and they need to turn up with a changed game plan as a batting unit to face a lot of spin.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul contributed an unbeaten 122 for the tourists in their first innings, and says today will be crucial in taking charge of the match.
Chanderpaul says if they bowl well enough and get it in the right area, anything can happen.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
