TNN | Dec 8, 2013
NEW DELHI:
When he reached 59 in his 100-run knock in the second one-day international against India in Durban on Sunday, South African opener Hashim Amla became the fastest batsman to complete 4000 ODI runs.
Playing his 83rd match, Amla took 81 innings to get to the milestone beating Sir Vivian Richards who got to the landmark in 88 innings in 96 matches.
Amla was also the quickest batsman to reach the 2000 (41 matches, 40 innings) and the 3000-run landmark (59 matches, 57 innings) in ODIs.
It has been a remarkable year for Amla as he has been chosen in both Test and ODI teams of the year by the International Cricket Council.
Predominantly known as a Test batsman, Amla holds the record for being the first South African batsman to score a triple century in Test cricket.
Amla has also been named as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2013.
On Sunday, Amla's 12th ODI century came off 116 balls and this was his third century against India.
