RAMSARAN APPOINTED NEW T&T MANAGER
published by ikhan on Tue, 11/12/2013 - 19:28
Trinidad Guardian article.
Port of Spain, Trinidad - Former sports minister Manohar Ramsaran has been chosen as the new manager of the T&T senior cricket team.
He replaces Omar Khan, who recently took the team to the Champions League T20 series in India.
This decision to remove Khan was made on the weekend by the executive of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) at their retreat at the Cascadia Hotel in St Anns.
Ramsaran has been the long-time president of Munroe Road cricket club and will be in charge of the national team for a one-year period.
His first assignment will be the Regional Super50 cricket tournament, which will be played in this country in January.
Ramsaran, who served as CEO of the TTCB for a while during the last tenure of Azim Bassarath’s administration, will have huge boots to fill as Khan has a successful record as manager, having won many titles with the senior team.
There has also been a change in the manager’s position for the national Under-19 team, as well as the national Under-15 team.
Tony Ramjit the former president of the Primary Schools Cricket League and manager of the Under-15 team for this season, has been moved up to manager of the national Under-19 team.
He replaces Roland Sampath, who also served as manager of the West Indies Under-19 team against Bangladesh, recently.
The Under-15 void left by Ramjit will be taken up by John Lewis of the East Zonal Cricket Council. The only manager retaining his position was national Under-17 manager Stephen Martel.
This was an automatic choice as the national Under-17 team won the regional title this past season.
The TTCB is expected to reveal all their decisions either today or tomorrow, as an emergency meeting was held last night to finalise all the positions that were awarded over the weekend.
As soon as all the positions are made clear by the TTCB, they are expected to get down to work. The national team will be at the top of the agenda, as the players will have to begin preparations soon for the Super50.
The tournament will be the first trial for Ramsaran and with T&T playing at home, the players will be under pressure from the public to deliver the silverware.
The board is likely to put a committee in place to deal with the national team alone, as many players are again expected to be out of the set-up playing international cricket or T20 cricket around the world.
