Glamorgan set to name West Indies assistant Toby Radford as new coach

Glamorgan are set to unveil Welshman Toby Radford as their new coach.

The former West Indies assistant coach and Middlesex man, who has worked with the likes of Andrew Strauss, Steven Finn and Chris Gayle, has been chosen as the man to replace departing head of elite performance Matthew Mott.

New chief executive and director of cricket Hugh Morris led the search for the new Glamorgan first team coach with the credentials of the Caerphilly-born 41-year-old preferred to the claims of current coaches Robert Croft and Steve Watkin.

Father Brian nurtured his son’s love for the sport with Radford playing his first games at Caerphilly’s Virginia Park.

After being scouted at 16, the batsman played just 14 first-class matches and six List A games for Middlesex and Sussex between 1994 and 1999 with a top score of 69.

After being released by Sussex, Radford concentrated on coaching and took a role as Berkshire cricket development officer in 1998 before launching the Middlesex Academy in 2003.

He enjoyed success as academy director and took over as interim first-team coach at Lord's when Richard Pybus quit midway through 2007.

Radford was appointed to the role full-time at Lord’s for 2008 during which time Middlesex won the Twenty20 Cup.

In 2010, Radford left England and moved to the Caribbean as director of the High Performance Centre in Barbados and in early 2012 was named the West Indies assistant coach under former Glamorgan all-rounder Ottis Gibson, who it is understood was never in contention for this role.
