I always have a soft spot in my heart for canje people , more like pity. I remember the time when the floods came down and 300 chickens at Fung -a- Fat chicken farm at no 19 village drowned .'
After lying in the flooded pens for two days , they dumped them in the trench which would take them to the sea but Ramdeo had other ideas . They blocked the trench with a sein and had a barrel of water heated by the roadside and before you knew it his two sons ramdeo and bramdeo along with his daughter Lilawattie had those rotting chickens feathered gutted and plucked
Ramdeo the Patriarch along with the matriarch pulawattie his wife made a grand anouncement " Beta .. Betty Canje market!!!. T he crowd who gathered there to watch this abomination burst out laughing.
They made a killing , whereas live ckickens were going for 80 cents per pound , they were selling plucked chickens for 50 cents per pound and before you knew it , it was all gone .
My momma passed on one wisdom to me , she said son " even if you are starving dont you ever make a purchase from canje market ... wise woman that , cause I know that Whatever gets knocked down on the road , sheep , cows , goats and it may be lying there for two days , you know that that eventually it will be skinned , butchered and onward to BellAIR ... sorry I meant CANJE MARKET
