illions of dollars went up in flames when a fire of unknown origin gutted three Regent street businesses at around 05:00hrs on Sunday. The fire reportedly started at Dillips variety store before quickly spreading to the two nearby businesses Prakash people’s and Monty variety stores. Another building was also scorched, however fire fighters worked quickly to contain the blaze preventing it from spreading to man’s variety store.
Owner of Dillip variety store, Dillip Morujani, who has been operating the store for eight years, says he was sleeping when he received a call about the incident. He further stated that his first thought was to dismiss the caller since he remembered that it was April fool’s day but when he arrived he was hit by the stark reality.
Fire Chief Marlon gentle says the fire department received a call and rushed to the scene. Mr. Gentle stated that the fire spread rapidly since the articles sold are combustible materials citing batteries, aerosol tins, plastics and clothing among others.
He also stated that on arrival the fire had already engulfed the building and that it was very smoky making it difficult for him to risk the lives of his firemen by sending them in Contrary to a negative comment by a business owner about the fire service not being equipped.
“When they got here there was visible flames but heavy smoke, what we have to consider was the security in building, secondly it would not have been safe to commit men into that building with that amount of smoke when you don’t know what was burning and where the fire was coming from you have to take into consideration fire fighting safety or people could die or be injured†the Fire chief said.
At the scene owner of neighboring stores were seen garbing their products and taking them away in the event that the fire spread. The building which belonged to Jaigobin has been the subject of a property dispute in the high court for the past three years.
