Are you sitting at your office during this time when many people are on holiday? Well, you are not alone.A
new report
from office space design company
Regus
shows 64 per cent of U.S. employees will be working between Christmas and New Year's and 56 per cent will go to the office to work.
"Economic uncertainty and a slow growth marketplace continue to put pressure on businesses to keep full steam ahead," said Regus Americas CEO Guillermo Rotman in a
statement
.
But here is the good news if you are currently in that majority: don't worry if you don't get much work done because you aren't expected to.
The survey shows 39 per cent of respondents believe workers will get very little work done during this time. Furthermore, more than half of those asked think people working over the holidays use it as a time to catch up on unfinished tasks.
Rotman said he is not surprised at how workers spend their time, but wonders if working at all during the holidays is a good idea.
"Many managers believe that time off with the family can give employees a refreshed outlook and a chance to decompress before returning to work," he said.
And he may be on to something. A study conducted by the University of Copenhagen reported in April by
Yahoo! Canada News
shows breaks actually help employees be more productive.
The people most likely to be working are those in small offices. More than two-thirds of small firm employees are working this week compared to less than half of those in large businesses.
Regus surveyed more than 12,000 workers for the study.
