Some people, when asked “What defines you?†might talk about their kids or their job. For others, it might be their condition, issue or disease. For many of us, what defines us is all the unresolved stuff we carry around with us like emotional baggage. For some people, this unresolved emotional baggage is very apparent.

It’s the anger or cynicism that they display. For others, their emotional baggage becomes apparent when you talk to them. For many of us, it’s only visible when you realise what the cost of carrying it around has been.

To understand our emotional baggage, we must understand, in part, our unconscious mind, which is the part of us that beats our heart, breathes our lungs and takes care of all the other bodily functions. Among many other things, your unconscious mind is responsible for storing and organising memories, and for repressing negative emotions and presenting those negative emotions for resolution.

Those negative emotions are stored throughout your body. You may, for example, carry stress in your shoulders or lower back. You might have noticed that when you get angry, there are certain aches and pains that go with it. Or you may have gotten a massage and experienced some unwanted emotions or memories. The problem is that when our negative emotions are presented for resolution, we often stuff them back down. After all, we don’t want to deal with that stuff…not now, anyway. The question is, if not now, then when? At least, that’s what our unconscious mind wants to know. So, it nags.
