Though already being advised of GECOM’s readiness to host elections, President David Granger has not definitively indicated when he will be announcing a date for the polls.
He told reporters this morning that he hopes to make an announcement tonight.
“I hope this evening, I would be able to make a public announcement on the date,” President Granger said.
GECOM had indicated that it would be ready for the polls by the end of February 2020.
The Head-of-State discussed the matter with Cabinet yesterday. The Department of Information (DPI) subsequently informed that President Granger will be addressing the nation tonight on elections

In a conversation with a friend last week, a political animal like me, I told him that elections will not be held before May 2020, by which time the APNU would have completed its five year term, effectively negating and nullifying the NCM. Imagine if it was the PPP government doing that - Guyana would have been burning and rioting with violence would have dotted the landscape. We saw how that was played out in a micro manner after the last elections.

While saying that March 2 is the earliest possible date for elections, Granger once again sets delaying conditions. This time he wants the opposition to return to parliament to grant a three month extension after the date per the NCM after they already have used up the extension. That is like locking the door after everything has been stolen.

The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) is interpreting President David Granger’s lack of constitutional compliance as a usurpation of executive power and a perpetuation of the charades that the Coalition has been engaged in since the beginning of the year.
