Report: Trump Joked Pence ‘Wants to Hang’ Gays

In a profile of Vice President Mike Pence published Monday in The New Yorker, Jane Mayer reports President Donald Trump has routinely mocked the staunchly conservative former Indiana governor’s opposition to abortion and homosexuality. Citing two sources about a White House discussion about gay rights with a legal scholar, Mayer reports Trump nodded toward the VP and and joked, “Don’t ask that guy—he wants to hang them all!” The article also describes the November 2016 meeting in which Ivanka Trump brought Gen. Michael Flynn into a meeting being run by then-transition leader Chris Christie. According to Mayer, “Christie tried to reclaim control of the meeting, but Ivanka took over. Praising Flynn’s ‘amazing loyalty to my father,’ she turned to him and asked, ‘General, what job do you want?’” Flynn allegedly said he wanted either the job of secretary of state or defense, but would settle for national security adviser. Flynn was fired in February after reports surfaced of his undisclosed foreign lobbying and calls to Russian officials surfaced.
