MAYOR of Montego Bay Glendon Harris is calling for Jamaicans to become "informers" in the fight against crime.
He said Jamaica is being held ransom by what he calls "modern-day black- heart men", who drive fear into its citizens and efforts must be made to speak out against them.
Mayor Harris, who was addressing the Lay Magistrates' Association of St James awards function recently at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, said it is time for the country to be rid of the "informer fi dead" culture and for persons to start being their brother's keepers.
"I want to challenge everyone here to join together to change our culture from the one where the feeling is that... informer fi dead, to one where we salute those who are brave enough to shine light on the modern black-heart men, who continue to strike fear in the minds of our people," he stated.
"We must celebrate our informer heroes... after all, the evil ones are the minority and if the rest of us become informers, they cannot kill us all. Can you imagine if every well-thinking Jamaican becomes an informer? Criminals would think twice before committing their cowardly acts and, before we know it, we could take back our towns, our districts, our parish, our country, and God's Earth which we are blessed with," Mayor Harris said.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

regarding the the informer syndrome in Jamaica and how through music and 'donmanship', the word informer had been changed from a beacon of hope and a bastion for justice to a scourge, which everyone wanted to distance themselves from. Consequently, and through the negative psychological impact, caused by the devaluing of the word informer, by those intent on instilling fear and shackling the hands and feet of justice, we have ended up in the clutches of criminals. This state of mental slavery, is then being used to silence people from speaking out against criminality and injustice.
I don't care which party Mayor Harris is affiliated with, he is on the 'ball', he has gotten it right. It is now time for Jamaicans to get up, stand up and stand up for our rights, in an effort to emancipate ourselves from this mental slavery, imposed on us by the 'bottom feeders' of society. take back our country and speak out against wrong, while lifting up and saluting those who do. I would really like for us to be at that point as Jamaicans but are we ever going to get there? You have to understand the fear because it is the lives of individuals at the brink of being snuffed out here. A murder is witnessed and i decide to go and report it because it was my friend that died, upon my return to that community i will be feeling the wrath of the gangsters in the area. Nobody likes an informer in the ghetto.
The sad truth is that sometimes persons really want to come forward and give their stories because they are just tired of all that is happening around them. When they hide and get to the police station, sometimes the very same police officers reported back to the area dons about who came to make the report.
Corruption in the police force is the real cause of this culture and until the issue is tacked from within then there is not going to be much change. The residents do not feel secure when officers come around. We need trust worthy and professional individuals in the police force. Those persons who are not afraid to go inside of these communities and dismantle the kingpin organizations in an attempt to get rid of the ghetto mentality.
