Another Test match, another record for Jimmy.

Considering what Anderson as achieved, I don't think he gets the recognition he deserves, and ask a lot of English cricket fans, or cricket fans in general and he rarely comes into people's top 5 cricketers. I'm not saying he isn't valued but I just think he's underrated by a lot of people, and most of the time he only gets a mention if he isn't selected rather than when he actually is.

That's not my experience, especially with the younger generation.

Even if you speak principally about English bowlers you will hear about Trueman, Statham, Larwood, Bedster, Anderson, Botham, Willis, Underwood etc.

Jimmy is very recognised.

However, like Kallis, his lack of personality makes him somewhat forgettable.

Statistically he is the best.

Up until 2005ish, England's been a rubbish cricket team. And even when they won, they won in the most dull fashion possible.

But then Flintoff and Pietersen came in. Then Cook. Then Anderson and Broad blossomed. Now they have Stokes. And Root.

When last has there been such a strong England team?

It's really a very well rounded team. The players' styles compliment each other so well.

A large part of that is due to Anderson. In the past, England didn't have any problem piling on big scores, but their bowling was never that good. Now they have the best English fast bowler since Gough, and arguably one of the best bowling pairs (Broad and Jimmy) of all time.

But it will be interesting to see how this England team travels. I know they lost their test tour in Pakistan, but that was a slightly different team, and they beat the Pakistanis in the ODI and T20 tours easily.

I think England go to Bangladesh next, and then a tough test tour of India. That means lots of flat pitches. Cook loves this. The other batsmen may struggle though, and also the bowlers. Rashid and Moeen picked up more wickets than Anderson in the UAE deserts I think, last year.

When was the last time Jimmy wasn't selected for the Test team when he was fit?

Completely agree, Mail. I'm not sure who pwarbi is talking to or what papers he reads, but this is definitely not the case. It is universally recognised that Jimmy is one of England's current three best players (Cook and Root the other two), and in consideration for top 5 all-time English fast bowler.

Well you have asked the most salient question apropos recognition and that is when has he not been selected when fit?

If you are going to mention my name on a post, then I would appreciate it if you actually addressed me directly and asked me the question rather than trying to talk about me behind my back so to speak.

My point is that I don't think that Anderson gets the recognition that he deserves. That's my opinion and I am entitled to it or in future should I just agree with everything that you say as well as dilinger10 now?

I did address you directly. Did you not see my question pointed towards you? Here is the link to my question: cricketwindies.com/the-pitch/jimmy-ander...msg705620/#msg705620

Both Mail and TriniDaddy also disagreed with your assessment that Jimmy is not recognised.

In your post, you said that Jimmy only gets recognised when he is not selected. So I will ask again, when was the last time Jimmy was not selected when he was fit?

Could you also point me in the direction of any articles or research studies that show that Jimmy is undervalued, underrated or overlooked?

Within the past year, both the Telegraph and Daily Mail have published multiple articles proclaiming Jimmy to be one of - if not the greatest - English fast bowler:

www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricket/intern...er-swing-bowler.html

www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/cricket/articl...s-greatest-ever.html

Opinions are encouraged, but backing them up with facts when asked is important to having a discussion that is based on reality and improving the level of discourse. Something that we strive for here.

I have to say I have struggled to like Jimmy as a person and the same applies to Kallis because of how they come across but effective Cricketers.

I did not think Jimmy was back to his best in the last Test but look forward to seeing him in full 'swing' come next assignment.

I like the fact we are getting the next set of lead seamers in the mix and in an around the squad.

I think our improvement commenced with Farbrace encouraging a fearless approach.
