We shouldn't forget that Paint has still yet to turn 24. He is still learning and growing as a batsman. Over the last 5 years, Paint has scored the second most runs (1839) by a batsman under 24. Kane Williamson is the only batsman to score more runs (2078) prior to his 24th birthday. Paint has 14 scores of 50+ over this period to Williamson's 17. Williamson's average against the top 7 over this period was 33.93. Paint's is 31.13.

And Kane started batting down low at 6.

Paint faces a tougher task as an opener. Maybe we should move him down the order; he might be more useful there.

Paint's numbers prior to turning 24 are almost identical to Gayle's:



His average is also in line with two other openers of recent vintage - ABdV and Phil Hughes.

Certainly no disrespect meant. Perhaps not the best phrase in light of the Hughes tragedy. The phrase "other openers over the last 15 years" would have worked also, but felt it to be a bit of a mouthful. Hughes was a highly touted young opening batsman.

The overarching theme being, that Paint's numbers are comparable to those put up by Gayle, ABdV and Hughes (3 highly regarded openers) before their 24th birthday.

Since 1990, 29 players have opened the batting in a minimum of 10 innings prior to their 24th birthday. The collective average of these 29 batsman is 34.11. Paint's average is 33.70. The collective average of all opening batsman since Paint made his debut in 2011 is 34.94.

Well lets wish Paint attend to those Flaws !!!

With all the video that is available on players these days, their flaws are magnified. It is up to the player to go away and make the necessary changes. The elite players make those adjustments.

Paint is still very young. He is learning the game, and in doing so, is still putting up very respectable numbers. We shouldn't ignore that he averaged 45 on the recent tour of Australia, and has 2 fifties so far in this series. For me, he is a player you build around. Besides, it's not as though there are any other openers banging down the door to replace him.
