Tendulkar was the apolitical face of a rising Indian. He was boyish, non-threatening, silent and shy. Even when he was thrashing teams, there didn't seem to be anything heroic or romantic about his batmanship, but rather something quietly diligent and dutiful. He was such a good Indian, he went on and married a doctor.

Ali, was the complete opposite. He understood Power, he distrusted Power, was massively confident, a giant chatterbox and got people thinking. And whether he were talking to Kings or vagrants, Ali command attention; the guy owned every room he stepped into.

Ali had his flaws - he flirted with Reaganism, he was very sexist in the 60s and 70s, and his version of black nationalism was probably counterproductive - but at his best he was both a great sportsman and a great civil rights figure.
