Hampshire fast bowler Fidel Edwards has suffered a broken leg after reportedly being injured playing football.

He is believed to have sustained the injury in the warm-up on the final morning of Hampshire's County Championship match against Yorkshire.

The 34-year-old West Indies seamer spent Wednesday night in Leeds General Infirmary after the incident.

"Today the process of healing starts both mentally and physically," he posted on his Instagram page.

Hampshire have been absolutely decimated with injuries to start the season. Reece Topley has broke his hand, Sean Ervine his finger, Liam Dawson has strained his abdominal, Chris Wood picked up an injury in the first innings and both Gareth Berg and Ryan Stephenson are out to start the season. They are getting incredibly thin on bowlers. They may have to start plucking players out of the stands if this continues. It does make their draws against Warwickshire and Yorkshire that much more impressive.

While I'm not saying that the players can't have any fun, and that of course accidents like this can happen, shouldn't they take things a little more carefully seeing as they know that they're depending on their bodies as a way to make a living?

He's an amazing player, sad to see sportsmen suffering from injuries.

As I am sure you are well aware, the England team plays football before every match. This is a big part of their pre-match warm up.

There was a great interview with the England coaches last year where they explained that the reason behind this is that it helps to get the players loose -  more o than just regular stretching and that it has the added benefit of getting the players in a competitive frame of mind before the start of the match.

Given that these types of injuries are few and far between, I am okay with the very minimal risk due to the perceived benefits.

Given some of England's fielding in years past, I'd have been afraid of them taking a shuttlecock to the eye.
