After Winning Title, West Indies Calls Out Its Cricket Board

West Indies stands atop the cricket world after its double triumph in the World Twenty20, when it became the first country to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same championship.

But even as its players celebrated Sunday, there were reminders of the tensions that made their triumph a surprise.

There was genuine joy as both the men’s and women’s teams danced on the field in Kolkata, India, after the presentation of the men’s trophy. But there was also open anger from the West Indies men’s captain, Darren Sammy, who used the platform of a live television interview to express his grievances with the West Indies Cricket Board.

“I really want to thank the heads of Caricom — throughout the tournament they have been supporting the team,” he said, referring to a flow of messages from the nations and states in the West Indies region. “And I’m yet to hear from our own cricket board. That is very disappointing.”

Unless it is felt that the team won in spite of the Board, we cannot have it both ways. When they lose, we pillory the Board but when they win cannot also pillory the Board. Not fair.
I do not trust the governments getting involved in the management of West Indies cricket. We might alter a few clauses in the constitution to change representation and limit the length of stay of directors, but we ought to keep the Board above our parochialism, stalemate tendencies and political shenanigans..

a strong message to the West Indies Cricket Board, which has been at loggerheads with the team and kept senior players out of the Test and One-Day International arena.

I am a South African and even though I am not clear on how exactly your board has intervered with your selection of players I think you should deem yourself lucky. South African cricket has been at the mercy of politicians for more than 40 years now. First we were boycotted by international teams after the government's decision to enforce apartheid laws, which had nothing to do with sport, and then after apartheid ended teams have been forced to use quota systems where certain players must play regardless of talent.

Do you believe that reverse racism as it is being practiced by our government is the way to go forward?

Thank you chairman. I love the forum and hope to continue posting here for a very long time.

Those players are world class yes and I am also a big supporter of  Amla, Tahir and Duminy. The issue is when the provincial teams are forced to play players of colour whether they are available or not. We had an incident earlier this year where the Golden Lions were down to only two players of colour on the field due to injuries and had to ask for special permision to continue the game. Their coach and even a fan had to field at one stage. Read the article here: www.sport24.co.za/Cricket/csa-turning-cr...nto-a-farce-20160219

This is when I feel a quota system has gone to far.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I am Afrikaans yes, but I am descended from the French Huguenots. Afrikaans people have received a bad reputation due to the things done by our fathers and their fathers, but in general I think we are a lot more tolerant of other races than some races are of sub cultures within their race. The Zulu and Xhosas come to mind, but lets leave that on the stove to simmer.

KP left the country as he disagreed with the reverse racism and quota system that is implemented in cricket, but instead of staying and actually making a difference he just fled to England. This is the issue that most South Africans have with him, instead of staying and trying to overcome his own perceived adversity he fled. He is seen as a coward and a traitor after his numerous interviews were he has openly criticised our country.
