Pietersen made scapegoat for England's Ashes loss: Viv Richards

West Indies legend Sir Vivian Richards has said that sacked England batsman Kevin Pietersen was made a 'scapegoat' for his team's poor Test form in their 5-0 Ashes humiliation in Australia.

Pietersen was released from his central contract in February with England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) managing director Paul Downton saying the decision was necessary 'to rebuild not only the team but also the team ethic' after the Ashes whitewash.

According to the BBC, the batting great expressed his sadness and disappointment at Pietersen's 'premature' exit, saying that there must have been much more in terms of what went wrong.

Richards further said he believes the ECB were looking for 'some heads to roll' and for some reason, Pietersen's 'head' was in the way, adding that judging from 'his side of the fence', Pietersen was made into a 'little scapegoat'.

The report mentioned that Jos Buttler's promotion from the one-day side into the Test side has been suggested as a way of replacing Pietersen's aggression in England's batting line-up.

Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

YEH VIV TALK NAH?

Seriously though, disagree. I'd backed KP to be in the squad, but it's not a scapegoat situation. Rather it exacerbated what's been brewing for so long. And maybe they decided it's not worth it to let it continue - which is something I disagree with (re: sacking KP) but I can still see it beyond the whole "scapegoat" aspect Viv is talking about.

Kylester,

I agree but I cannot recall a player who can merit selection being overlooked for being 'sacked'.

Having skippered many different players, one has to man manage in such a way so as to not appear to be applying a different rule for different people.

However you have to and I suspect they could not manage KP. One must remember that the issue with Flower, went back to KP's objection to both Moores and Flower.

I would have liked to have seen him in the T20 World tournament.

Anyway we have moved on and I wish him the best.

Sometimes I just think this Vivian guy does not know his ass from his elbow. I find him such a media whore. Some one must be paying him to say this.

look here....I have not been following the situation as maybe I shud but I dont see why Pietersen had to be sacked.

there is no better england player than Pietersen and the players come first..not officials..and certainly not players like skunt Cook and Broad..whom I consider to be 2 spoil brat, namby pamby arse holes.. who by ability/results would be worth their places, but who would occupy no positions of leadership in my scheme of things

the england team is by personality like homogenized milk, a general behavioural sameness in which Pietersen stands out and for that rubs everybody raw

I dont care save I rather enjoy Pommie discomforts and failures.  if the Pommies cant manage their affairs to such a successful extent as to keep their best players in the fold, that's their dam business, their problem.. and my happiness.

discovering world class players and the managerial sophistication to keep them in the fold.. and most critically, performing like world beaters.. is the point of it all.  that this situation could develop, costing the team and nation its best player.. means a substitution has taken place in which the concerns of officials/leading PET players, trump the basic principle in the game..as above.

the same thing obtains in the west indies now where the wicb bureaucracy is dictator and piks as it wants... not the best team available but the team that does not challenge the status quo

by this principle Viv is right.  Andy Flower screwed Pietersen in passing away as manager.  and the wimp lackey players have Joined in support..brat Broad and lily livered SCook..not to mention the previous Strauss who in dumping on Pietersen, is no doubt bucking for appointments on his way up the bureaucracy in retirement.

and of course Prior, from whom I never anticipated turning on his fellow players :o :o :o  I was wrong about Prior a player I really liked.  I was sad when he got dropped. no more though.

and the retirement of Swan at this point tells a whole lot about that english team.  there was no need for Swan to go, he was no Pietersen or Prior, not in conflict with anyone at all .

it cud only have been that Swan saw the team take directions he was totally dissatisfied with... probably did not like the leadership of Cook, had lost faith in Flower..had seen it all come a-cropper in defeat in Oz, and decided that he would take no more..that it would not change any time soon, his performance was affected.. so he split

that is a take on Swan's retirement I find viable enough now.

Viv is right.  Flower screwed Pietersen.  Flower knew SCook felt threatened by Pietersen..that both SCook and Broad would side with him and he tainted Pietersen and took him down with him.

that is victimisation and scaping a goat for defeat.  the whole program now is blame Pietersen for that failure.  he was so disruptive a dressing room factor he destabilized the side and its chances of winning in Oz.

that is a total fabrication but it is out there and Pietersen wears it.  that is scape goat

Alastair Cook is a wimpish rass as far as I see..not a great batsman at all but an accumulator of runs pure and simple.  when the going is good he can pile it on.  when the going is tuff he is just ordinary

England is toast save against west indies led by incompetents like Dwayne Bravo..who has now proved himself to be a fool as great as Sammy...and Sammy himself..and an admin like what we have now

England will not recover from this development any time soon.  and instead of kicking Andy Flower straight to the curb they have given him a job right in the heart of things.  good!  I look forward to an england return to the doldrums for a long long time to come

Perhaps the most perplexing aspect of AT&T Stadium, otherwise known as “Jerry World,” is the glare from the sun that bursts through the windows and shines directly onto the field. Time and time again the glare has impacted players’ visibility during games, yet Jerry Jones refuses to make any changes to account for the sun.

Rather than install curtains, Jones has previously said he feels it’s a home-field advantage to have that type of stadium factor impacting games. Well, the glare ended up benefitting the Chiefs early into Thursday’s Thanksgiving game, as a pass from Dak Prescott to George Pickens fell incomplete, at least in part due to the impact of the sun’s glare.

SerenaThis batting performance by the West Indies in the second innings blew me away. I kept closing my eyes and then rubbing and opening them again and sat transfixed as I watch that unbelievable partnership between John Campbell and Shai Hope. What a magnificent performance by these two! It just goes to show that patience, determination and effort can go a long way to improve the performances of the West Indies team. Let us hope that this effort by West Indies batsmen would not be a one-off performance, but will be the beginning of a renewed effort to improve the performances of the team, going forward.(13.10.2025, 09:28)(09:28)0
