I have often said that to understand a man, you must understand the condtions under which he grew up.
It is true for Kalli and Chanders. They are survivors. Kalli was treated terribly by the WICB.
In '83 he scored over 2,000 runs in county cricket & was named one of Wisden 5 cricketers of the year,
yet was not called to play for WI. He took apart Marshall, Garner and other West Indians playing county cricket at the time.
Not a single Govt. in the WI spoke out against what PNC (Burnham) govt. was doing to Indians in Guyana at athe time.
They banned importation of Indian staples like Dal and Flour.
Kalli was deprived of making a living playing cricket for the WI and he had to survive.
Dedicated as any WI cricketer, yet nary a mention of him or any Indian in Fire in Babylon. Why?
He still does not get the respect he deserves Explain why another Indian, Kanhai, only captained Wi for a few matches and
you will undestand the frustrations of Indians in WI.
