St. John's, Antigua : Former West Indies fast bowler Andy Roberts has accused some umpires and the world governing body for cricket, International Cricket Council (ICC), of targetting Caribbean bowlers Shane Shillingford and Marlon Samuels.
Both players were reported for suspect action by umpires during the second Test between the West Indies and India, reports CMC.
Roberts said there are many other bowlers who should be called for a suspect action but added that those in authority lack the conviction to point them out, according to the Antigua Observer.
"As far as Shillingford is concerned, he has been under the gun since he started playing for Windward Islands, so it's nothing new. But my only problem is that they are picking on Shillingford and Marlon Samuels to some extent when there are so many pelters around the world that they are not calling," Roberts said.
"You have pelters who have world records who they are not calling and you have pelters who are top of the ICC rankings who they are not calling; not one, not two, because in the top 10, you have at least three or four people who have their elbows more than 15 degrees, but they are not calling them and you know why? They are from countries that have clout and the West Indies have no clout in international cricket," the newspaper quoted Roberts as saying.
Samuels and Shillingford were reported at the end of the second day's play Nov 15 by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Nigel Llong, TV Umpire Vineet Kulkarni and Andy Pycroft of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees.
Pycroft handed over copies of the reports to the West Indies team manager after the conclusion of the Test.
The umpires' reports have cited concerns over the two players' bowling actions, with particular references to Samuels' "quicker delivery".
Roberts said ICC should consider placing a ban on the famous 'doosra' delivery if they are not going to penalise offenders across the board.
"ICC has condoned chucking for years because, number one, they are afraid of the Asian countries, so they allow the Asian countries to get away with most things," the legendary pacer said.
"So if Shane is throwing the doosra, you have Muralitharan who bowled the doosra for years, so what you are telling me is that he bowls it, but Shane throws it.
"You have so many people now bowling doosra and the only off-spinner in the world that I can see that hasn't bowled a doosra is Graeme Swann out of England. He bowls an arm ball. So ICC needs to either ban doosras or call everybody who bowls a doosra for throwing," the former West Indies fast bowler said.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

Ahhh! Andy Roberts!
another reason why they call him great. he is an expert observer who does not mince words nor tamper with the truth.
this is the quality of men we need at the wicb. Roberts should be wicb chairman not a jackass like Cameron!

* Murali pelted his way to 800 wickets in tests.
* Ajmal and a few others may also pelt a few.
* The WICB ought to stand up for Shillingford.
* But alas the morons at the WICB are spineless.

I will disagree with you Rev. Murali has been the most tested player in the history of the game. It has not never proven that he pelts!. He has a problem with his arm.
if you look at this video you will see why ...

wat kind of argument is dat Googs ::confused::
if something is wrong with his arm and it makes him pelt he pelts..so according to the law he should not bowl.
you do not excuse he pelting because he has a bad arm
if that is justification you you can excuse what anybody does based on their body configuration.
while I did not not think so earlier Murali pelted his way to 800 test wickets. the Rev is absolutely right

I disagree with Rev's analysis of Murli for the reason Goog Lee stated and, further, based on the permissible angle, he is not in beach of the Law.
I have had concerns about Ajmal but he has not been reported. Being objective, if I had to compare Shillingford with Ajmal then the former comes off worse to my eyes.
Samuels, for me, pelts non stop.
It used to be simple, round armed or you are pelting. Rules being what they are means Ajmal does not chuck.
We must recall Shillingford being called locally when he was much younger. This is his third such report by three different Umpires, as far as I am aware, so I do not see a conspiracy.
However the Murali case has damaged generations who continue to push what is acceptable and what is not.

wrong! pelting involves straightening out the arm which Murali does NOT do. Bowling with your elbows bent has nothing do to do pelting. It when you straighten out the that curve....
the other bowlers like Ajmal, Shilly, Samuels, etc straightens out their arm!

mapoui,
Was Shillingford not called for an inappropriate action by three different umpires commencing with a home umpire, when quite young? I am subject to correction here Sir.
I agree he pelts less than Samuels but do you not blame Coaches up the ranks for not teaching him to bowled in a round armed manner?
The issue of the others you, and perhaps I, suspect is a different case. The fact that person A chucking and getting away with it is no excuse/ defense for you me or Shillingford, if we pelt.
No sides taken here but his jerk seems more pronounced than others with dubious actions, just my view.

the way I see it easyride is that by the time a kid reaches 15 and pelting fuhget it. he shud bat or keep and fuhget bowling. he will never develop a fair action..or it will be near impossible for him to do so so the bowling project is best abandoned early.
you have to get then very early and bring forward those with good action and the quality rudiments of good bowling... while redirecting the rest
I watched Shillingford bowl and to my naked eye he looked good to go.
as Roberts suggested ban the Doorsra if that ball cause bowlers to chuck.
but additionally the ICC playing field is not level.
there is another ICC in the world...the international criminal court. all they do is go after black men in the world. they have never charged and prosecuted a vast white global criminal yet..only the black ones.
its the same with the cricket. the cricket authority penalises only west indians. no one else.
for me Shillingford can bowl all day, every day, all year long, forever..as long as the international cricket remains, a neo colonialist, racist and biased piece of crap..which is what it is now
