The Brits renamed Sri Lanka, Ceylon because they were incapable of pronouncing it properly. So, they gave it an anglicised name instead.

The actual colonial name was Serendib given by the Arab traders a thousand years ago. The Portuguese modified it and renamed it as Ceilão in 1500 AD. The British arrived 250 years later (after the French, the Danes, and the Dutch) and modified it further to Ceylon.
