203 not out: Chanderpaul’s marathon innings came against South Africa at Georgetown in March 2005. Coming in at his customary number five position, Chanderpaul occupied the crease for 540 minutes, during which he faced 370 balls, and hit boundaries from 23 of those. In a high scoring match, West Indies batted first, and piled up 543 for 5 declared, Wavell Hinds also coming up with a double hundred. But, it was Chanderpaul’s knock at put West Indies firmly in control. South Africa had to fight hard from there to save the match.

153 not out: Another unbeaten hundred, this time against Pakistan at Bridgetown. More importantly, this knock resulted in a West Indian victory. Chanderpaul’s knock came in West Indies’ second innings as they were looking to set a big target for Pakistan. His unbeaten innings lasted 358 minutes and 254 balls during which he hit 10 fours and a six. This was to go with the 92 he made in the first innings, with Brian Lara having already registered a hundred. West Indies went on to win the Test by 276 runs.

Was Chanderpaul a selfish sportsman?
JANUARY 24, 2016 | BY KNEWS | FILED UNDER LETTERS
Dear Editor,
Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s resignation in my view came far too late. He should have done so more than 18 months ago when he was overlooked by the selectors in selecting teams for One Day International matches ( ODIs). I am a strong supporter of the Guyanese left hander and I have time and time again suggested to him that he should resign long ago. After his failure against England when he scored 0, 25, 7, 1 and 13 against England and had a miserable tour in South Africa when he scored 91  for the entire series I wrote in the regional newspapers “I think he should resign and call it a day before he is kicked out.” I advise him to quit on a high note, but he ignored my call wanting to surpass Brian Lara’s 11,953since he was only 86 runs away. Lara scored his runs in 131 Tests at an average of 52.88, whileShiv made his 11,867 in 164 Tests at an average of 51.37.
The 41 year old middle order batsman is undoubtedly one of the best batsmen the West Indies has seen. He was described as very safe like money in the bank. He has the record for batting for 1513 minutes and faced 1051 balls without being dismissed. At 19 he partnered Lara in Antigua which allowed the Trinidadian to break Garry Sobers record of 365 runs against England. In his long career he scored 30 Test centuries and 66 half centuries as compared to Brian 34 centuries and 48 fifties. Brian has received an honorary doctorate from the University of the West Indies, and was awarded the region’s highest honour, Order of the Caribbean Community (OCC) as well as Trinidad and Tobago’s highest award, the Trinity Cross. A park was named in his honour in Port of Spain. Shiv received Guyana’s third highest award, the CCH (Cacique Crown of Honour) and a street in Georgetown was named in his honour by the Mayor, Hamilton Green, who knew the Unity Village born cricketer since he was a teenager.
It is said in some quarters that he was a selfish cricketer, who plays for himself and not his team because he tried to remain “not out” in order to boost his average. However I do not think that there is too much merit in this accusation. However, I cannot place Shiv in the same category with Lara, but he has done extremely well for the region. He captained the Windies in 14 Test matches and 16 One Day International (ODI) matches and was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year 2008  The Guyana Government and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) should give him a memorable farewell gift. Maybe CARICOM should consider him for an award.

Loop News takes a look at some interesting tidbits about Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the quiet cricketer affectionately known to many fans as ‘Tiger’.

The news that West Indies cricket stalwart, Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been excluded from training camp for the upcoming series against Australia has brought quite a reaction from cricket fans. Chanderpaul has been a staple in the West Indies squad for just over two decades and is credited with holding the West Indies team together after the retirement of star batsman, Brian Lara.
Loop News takes a look at some interesting tidbits about of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the quiet cricketer affectionately known to many fans as ‘Tiger’.

1. The son of a fisherman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul was born on August 16, 1974, in Unity Village, East Coast, Demerara, Guyana.
2. ‘Shiv’ is a left-handed batsman and right-arm legbreak bowler, and made his Test debut for the West Indies in his home country of Georgetown, Guyana, against England in 1994. He served as the West Indies Test captain from 2005 -2006.
3. A devout Hindu, he has three children – Ciara, Bradley and Tagenarine (Brandon). He and Tagenarine have the distinction of being only the second father-son duo to play together in first-class cricket in the Caribbean.
4. Chanderpaul was awarded the Wisden Cricketer of the Year and ICC Player of the Year awards for the year 2008.
5. It has been widely reported that in 1999, Chanderpaul shot a policeman in the hand after he mistook him for a thief. However, he was not charged.
6. He was made an honorary citizen of Dominica in 2011 for becoming the most capped test player in West Indies history, and has received Guyana’s third highest national award, the Cacique Crown of Honour. In Guyana’s capital city, Georgetown, there is a street named after him – Shiv Chanderpaul Drive.
7. In 2005, it was reported that he lost almost all of his possessions at his home in Guyana to flooding.
8. He suffered from a floating bone in his foot, for which he underwent surgery in 2000 to have it removed – seeing an improvement in his consistency after that.
9. Shivnarine Chanderpaul is the first man in history to have gone 1000 minutes in Test cricket without conceding his wicket, more than once.
10. In 2012, Chanderpaul became the 10th batsman in the world to reach the milestone of 10,000 Test runs and is the West Indies’ second-highest Test scorer.

While every cricket fan will be sad to see the loss of Chanderpaul, does the article not go a little too far? While there's no doubt he's been, and will be a legendary figure in the cricket world and more than fondly remembered, cricket as a game will survive and new players will come to take his place, just as what's happened in the past.

He will be missed, but him retiring first spell the end of cricket itself, like the tone of the article tends to suggest.

There is only one other West Indies batsman, who had those awkward shots like Chanderpaul and that was one Charlie Davis, who played some pretty weird shots. But Charlie Davis could get runs still.
In terms of concentration Chanderpaul was in a league of his own , he could wait out any bowler and make his shots, when the time is right,
Truly, Chanderpaul stands as one of our greatest batsmen.

ChristinaIt is time for a full evaluation and accountability to the people of this region for the disastrous batting performance of the West Indies Cricket Team. We cannot disregard what all of us witnessed and endured in the last three test matches. This is not about our players, administrators, or any individual; it is an entire system that is failing, and together, all of us must fix it now.
