Yao is not an American citizen, he is/was on one of those special visas that the US grant to athletes and other persons in the 'entertainment business' - these are called "P" visas

to be honest i was never interested in him. i just knew he was chinese, that wasnt something that was prevalent in the NBA at the time and that was it.  Never listened to him speak.
