MV Torani runs aground, passengers evacuated

The ferry vessel, MV Torani, which was experiencing technical difficulties overnight, departed Parika Tuesday morning only to break down and eventually run aground on a sandbank.Well-placed sources confirmed that speedboats and another Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) ferry assisted in evacuating passengers and taking them to Supenaam.
However, the vehicles remained aboard the Torani which is grounded on sandbank in the vicinity of Wakenaam and Hogg Island.
The General Manager of T&HD could not be immediately contacted but sources said the Torani's rudder might have stuck and the vessel was "going around in circles."
The problem was not a very grave one that could have resulted in injuries to passengers or damage to items.
However, passengers were badly inconvenienced.
