Note that most religious cults lure their members into similar psychological traps. The member is always waiting on the "revelation" and the "moment in which the messiah comes" to "bring ultimate truth".

The cult member is pushed into an Us vs Them dynamic, and spends all his time hating disbelievers (they're corrupt, can't see the truth etc), and clinging to the certainty that soon all will be revealed, and either an Apocalypse will occur or Peace On Earth will be achieved.

And of course that moment never comes, which leads to the cult member engaging in all sorts of rationalizations and defense mechanisms.
